all of a sudden photoshop wont let me ctrl click the layer to select all in that layer. it's just changing from (shape 1, rgb/8) to (rgb/8) you used to be able to hold down the ctrl key and then click the layer to select it. what the deal? did a setting get changed or something? and by the way i am using cs2

You have to Ctrl click the thumbnail rather than the name in the layers palette.

Ctrl-click or Command-clicking layer doesn't load layer boundaries as selection (Photoshop CS2)

Control-clicking on a multiple layers selects them, handy if you want to 'chain' them when they are not adjecent. Did cost some time to find out for me too, but I am getting used to multiple-control-click-targetting fast. I even made up a word for it...
