The link is to the previous thread regarding metaball mapping.This time though I wanted to see if I could compensate for the polar distortion that happens to the texture map. I set a simple enough challenge:
See if I could determine what shape would be required on the texture map to result in a wide, relatively straight band wrapping around the sphere in either direction.
Side to side is easy...no polar distortion. Going from front to back was harder but I eventually got it. Of course I only got the top half at first then had to sort out how to get the bottom half to work.
I know there are math folk out there who could tell me exactly the dimensions of the oval cut outs...in reality they are slightly distorted ovals...but I slept through much of high school algebra, winged it in geometry, and flailed my way through calculus in college so this was good old trial and error.
So AS, this should at least allow you to come up with straight stripe over the top of your sci-fi Vicki helm in the event she wants to join an intergalactic football team.
