I shouldn't say 'greeble' really, 'cos that's an auto-process and these blocks were made by hand in Sketchup. Nurnies and widgets then.

I shall continue exploring this stuff because it's good for getting the hang of the modelling tools. And good fun.

Looks cool, nice to have that person in there for perspective.

Great view, I just saw an image somewhere, along the same idea, the used spanner cubes to croos the space, and a GI setup. Very cool.

Really nice, and the character give a good sens of scale. What kind of light setting did you used?

Thanks for your comments.

"I'm just getting to grips with Ketchup"

Which version are you on? I'm on version 3 - had it for ages but only really started using it this last couple of weeks. I might upgrade to 5 so's I don't get stuck in 'old ways'. ;-)

ICM:
"...I just saw an image somewhere, along the same idea..."

I was inspired by stuff in a link Rochr provided in another Greeble thread:
http://www.richardrosenman.com/greeble.htm

pidjy:
"What kind of light setting did you used?"

One radial light with slightly soft shadows at 100% intensity. The rest is the power of Bryce True Ambience.

In this case the shortcomings of that process were not a concern. The techno-blocks have no smoothing, and the 'Poser' figure is used small enough that the lack of smoothing is not evident.

The render took 7 hours at this size at 256rpp on a P4 2.53Ghz.

deadman67:
"i wouldn't mind having this for an object will you be making it available?"

Crickey, I think that's the first time I've been asked for something. I have no clue about 'making things available'. I'll have to look into that. Yikes.

Zhaan:
"Needs some greenery"

You want trees now?! ;-)

"Making things available', easy as pie, just zip the model, add a thum, I can host it or Rendergods could, put in freestuff and voila! available to the masses...=)

I thought greeble just meant bits, I don't think it meant "Auto", I've made greeble without automation. I thought "greeble" was one type of bits and "nurnies" was another type - I just can't remember what the difference is - nor where I saw that definition. Very nice trench mind you! I particularly like the definition on the left-hand wall. (Looks like nicer 'bits') But that's probably something to do with the slight shadow that wall is in - the shadow gives better definition.

"I thought greeble just meant bits, I don't think it meant "Auto"..."

You are quite correct, FranOnTheEdge, and I'm sorry if led anyone astray with my misinformation. There are programs (plugins) out there called "Greeble" and I assumed this is where the name came from.

A bit of web research leads me to believe that "greeble" and "nurnies" are the same thing, though some people use the terms to describe slight variations in the style of 'bits'.

I'm going to stick with the term "widgets", which is what Brit special effects people called detailing on space ship models before the days of computer graphics.

"But that's probably something to do with the slight shadow that wall is in..."

That and the view angle. It's the same wall as the one facing it. In fact it's the same wall as the back wall and the same as the floor. I never said I wasn't lazy!

Because of this repetition, I won't be releasing this 'model' as is. What I'll do is make up a load more similar blocks over the next week or so and add them to the twenty used here. People can build their own structures to suit.

PJF, this is excellent work my friend. Use of the light source is most becoming even though you might think that the actual greeble is as an actual 3D object. Now, is it? What program are you using if you dont mind my asking.. Im totally enjoying itthanks!

PJF, "I'm going to stick with the term "widgets", which is what Brit special effects people called detailing on space ship models before the days of computer graphics." Lol! I'm a Brit, and I didn't know that. ggg I thought a 'widget' was a US term, probably from that film with James Garner and... I think Doris Day; called "Wheeler Dealers" where a company called "Universal Widget" was involved... but then "Universal Widget" hadn't actually MADE anything for some 20 odd years or so, If memory serves... SketchUp looks interesting....
