Subject: What video card should I get?

It's time to upgrade my video card. I currently have a Gateway 830GM with the video card it shipped with. I don't want to spend more than $200 or $250. Are there any decent ones that are good for Vue 5 Inf and that are in my price range?

Did some research on that Gateway. While the Intel GMA 900 graphics chip is not bad - for an integrated graphics chip! - even a $60 graphics card like an nVidia 6200 or ATI X300 will outperform it by a factor 2 or better. So upgrading your graphics certainly makes sense. What card? The most important aspect is OpenGL support. In my experience nVidia tends to be better with OpenGL than ATI. An nVidia QuadroFX or ATI FireGL is out of budget. Those are professional 3D graphics cards, starting at about $500 for the cheapest versions. A nVidia 6600GT based card might be a good choice. Decent OpenGL support, decent pricing, and easily 5 times as fast as your integrated chip. Maybe you can get a simple nVidia 7800 based card for about $200. I'm not sure. Your mainboard has a PCI-Express expansion slot for graphics cards. That means you can't put an nVidia 6800 based AGP card in it. Which is a pity - I tweaked my older 130 6800LE into a QuadroFX4000 ($800 card!) using RivaTuner, and it absolutely flies under OpenGL. Faster than the $500 7800GTX in my other machine. The newer nVidia consumer graphics cards can no longer be tweaked into Quadros - nVidia has made it impossible on a hardware level. Still, a consumer level nVidia 6600 or 7800 will work fine with Vue Infinite, and the high end 6600s (and probably low end 7800s) are within your budget. Good luck!
