Subject: P5/P6 Glass material?

diolma ( ) posted Sun, 09 April 2006 at 2:34 PM · edited Tue, 14 January 2025 at 7:25 PM

I know this has been covered quite well in previous threads, but I wasn't too interested then and now need to know... I need a shader for clear glass, as used in wine glasses, beer mugs, any other glass containers. My main problem seems to be with the diffuse colour. It doesn't seem to matter what I set it to, aor at what value, the diffuse still interferes with the rendering of the glass. I'm OK with the transparency (set at 99% for the main trans, 75% for the edge(?) trans, fall-off = something reasonable), and have reflectivity and refraction nodes set up such that they complement each other. Specularity is turned off (unless I get evidence to the contrary). As is Ambient. BUT... What should I set the Diffuse to be? Full white washes out everything, any lower value starts adding "grey shades" to the glass (making it look like its got dust on it). Any suggestions appreciated. PS, if it'll spur you, I can do this quite well in Vue with the same object...:-)) - but I want to do it in Poser. That "close up, freshly-cleaned wine glass" effect is what I want (complete with darker bit in the rim). Cheers, Diolma

(Click the pic for a bigger version) Try setting the transparency to 0. It sounds silly, but the reflect/refract should actually give you the transparency anyway.

Thx, ernyoka:-)) errm... transparency to "0" or "0.3"? (I'm not afraid to experiment, just wondering why your written answer differed from your example).. Incidently, the pic above is a trial Vue (nearly 1 hour) rendering that I'm trying to re-create in Poser. (WIP, the model isn't complete yet, much to be done...) It's an important part of my (hardly started) Avatar..:-)) Cheers, Diolma

Set transparency and trans edge to zero, diffuse value to zero. The reflection and refraction values should add to 1, with the emphasis on refraction (the exact mix depends on the scene and your taste). The refractive index for glass is about 1.5.

Excellent glass materials in the car materials package from Templargfx in free stuff. I use it all of the time.

Katharina Harders (MEC4D) has also made a wonderful glass pack (not free though) well worth getting. Heh and as to why my answer differed.. I wrote it first and found something glass I'd made LOL I didn't even notice I'd contradicted myself

Not to worry, ernyoka - I tried your setting quickly6 in Poser (w/o the transparency) and they worked very well :-)) So now I can have the model in both Vue & Poser... BTW, mariner, it's not going to stay a tumbler (except that I'm not coing to overwrite that particular .obj, it's destined to be a beer-mug, with handle, beer and slightly overflowing foam. IF I can get the dratted handle shape right (on 3rd try now...) Cheers, Diolma
