Poor Eovia marketing. And an Eovia CEO who's only looking at his next company to sell. DAZ will bring new customers to Carrara. Customers that probably never heard of Eovia.

I wouldn't say Eovia had "poor" marketing. Their marketing was effective enough to convince me to buy Carrara5, and I see several other new users in this forum. But marketing is something that DAZ excels at and I believe the merging of the talents and strengths of DAZ and Eovia U.S. will result in many new users for Carrara and Hexagon. The more "seats" an app has, the more money for R&D, and the more profit for the company. DAZ has apps that make it easy for potential CG enthusiasts to get their feet wet. If only a fraction of these folks decide they want to progress beyond pushing the "make-art" button stage and really learn some CG skills, it will mean a lot more "butts" in Carrara and Hexagon seats.
the main advantage, as I see it, is from daz platinum users, who will stampede like a swarm of locusts to buy any new sale items (textures, character files, models), even though they will never use them. that's where the money comes from - the loyal herd, who actually post messages in forums and chat rooms, urging their peers to buy the latest sale item in the platinum club. with that kind of peer pressure going on, it's no surprise that some of them spend hundreds of dollars per month, thousands of dollars per year, only to fill up CDs with items they soon forget about, and in some cases (textures in particular) they may have bought the same item two or more times. add them to the customer base for hexagon, offer hexagon free or at a nominal price, then the loyal customer base will similarly stampede to buy the necessary add-on modules to make hexagon work for them, even if they never use the modules and have no idea of how to use them. they will also stampede to buy shaders and models for hexagon, because they're on sale and they don't want to miss out on a good price, even though it's unlilkely they will ever use the items.
I'm reserving judment for the time being as I have this foreboding sense of Deja-Vu here - if a Carrara 5.5 appears I think I will really worry - there's just something about version 5.5 that scares me.
On the lighter side I wonder if our copies of RDS will be able to be used as an upgrade path?

Chuckle...
Fast-forward six months from now...
DAZ is proud to present the Carrara 5.5 Upgrade. While we were not able to address all, er...some, er... more than a few of the bug fixes and requests, we nonetheless have released Carrara 5.5 with the exciting new Smirk Editor® for DAZ characters! We also have plastered our logo on the product, and added a variety of props to the Browser, including the Rubber Duckie for Bathtime Victoria (full textures and morphs sold separately), the Spiked Codpiece for the Freak, and the Bouncy Morphing Beach Ball, complete with squash and stretch morphs. The first 200 Pre-orders will also get the Millennium Aardvark (a $22.95 value) for free! So order today, and unleash your creative potential!!!

So does this mean we should join the Platinum Club now to assure we get the best possible pricing on all future upgrades?
Let's see that's $AUD 40.20 to join and $AUD 10.67 / month - allowing 8 months until an upgrade is available (At Least) - that's a total of $AUD 125.56 .......
Hmmmmm
This is the sort of BS marketing that concerns me....

The platinum thing does bother me a bit. I can see that working for alot of their customers who purchase regularly...it could save them money, but pushing it and strapping it on to other things doesn't appeal to me. Alot of people like that subscription club approach. Like that artzone stunt w/ PC only member invites. That's the opposite of open community.

That's the approach they took with Bryce - I'm concerned they will take it that way again to sell their "New" products and it will be all the people who are in the "Club" who will see the biggest savings whilst the current user base gets zilch

Well, I would bet anything a PC membership will be tied into this hex thing. I have already bought C3, C5pro, hex1.2, and hex 2 since dec 2005. (got c3 in the late fall, I think planning on upgrading.)(Got mimic pro and some DAZ stuff also) So I am already in it so to speak. I don't think that part will matter so much because they will likely lower the prices anyway.

Holly molly I'm confused. For almost 8 years I used lightwave. I paid close to $2000 for it . Than they gave it away for $899. What a cheep trick to play on loyal users who payed the big bucks! I was so po..ed I decided I would not upgrade, sold it and when Carrara 5 pro beta was relesed I thought yes Eovia has made good on all the failures and missed promises of matacreation .they finally had a high end product that could reach the big 5.
Heck I just dished out over $25,000 on a whole new studio , equiptment ect , with Carrara5pro as my central app on 4 top line workstaions with full studio dv edit capabilites ect. ! No bull crap so I'm sweating the gamble I will probably now lose.
When daz bought bryce I upgraded to 5 and was so dissapointed I never uses it again. They claim it was because Corel did not want to do a core rewrite. So you bought it. Fix it. Eovia bough carrara and did so beyond most everyones expectations
What made Carrara rock is that programers not marketers fixed it. So it WORKS. And certainly they made very well on sales of 5 and 5 pro dont let anyone fool you they didnt need help from Daz.
I read that many say they shall wait and see and not judge. I cant help but have a sinking feeling in my gut. Carrara needs the Eovia group to continue onto 6 I have no doubt of that. I am a member of the SDK group ,and I see no way without these minds behind the product , how can it grow? Daz is too slow in the pipeline and although great at marketing fall way short of making worthy software of the stature carrara 5 has reached with Eovias minds behind it. In fact on there forum they make many excuses why things cant be done with bryce that are stupidly simple minor programming routes that don't require rewrites of core but understanding of architexture. Why is it Daz never releases the bryce SDK? Like the poser SDK its some secret code LOL ..not. Most of use old timers have hacked the guts of every metacreations legacy package , we know the whats true.
My list of improvements and features for 6 seemed within the grasp of Eovia but with daz I've lost all confidance. Are they willing to speek up? Say hey we know Carrara ? inside and out ! we can make 6 to the expectations Eovia has now set ? Doubt it.
there is nothing worse in this 3d world than to get behind a product get comfortable and fimilar with companies , people , products ....... Than feel they just sold out your future with the product you supported.
In a year there will either be a Carrara 6 success or failure. If it fails Than Carrara will fall off the map like bryce has and we Loyal supporters to keep up with the times will have to move on to yet another product or suffer the wooooasmeee complex. I'm not looking to gamble my future of my work or wallet for 3d rollette . Its a crappy game these companies play. To bad I payed the price.
