Subject: Putting animation online

Mikewave ( ) posted Wed, 26 April 2006 at 8:42 PM · edited Fri, 27 September 2024 at 7:54 PM

Hello animators!!! This is my first post on this forum (been on the LW-forum for some time now) and I was wondering if you guys could help me out... I'm working on a short animation; rendering frames in Lightwave, making .mov file in Quicktime Pro and putting it all together in Flash MX. I want to put the mov-file online to receive feedback on it (since 'rosity won't upload animations) and am thinking about using ImageShack for this. I've noticed they accept swf files and more important; they seem to offer their services for free. Are there things I should know about before I host it on ImageShack? Are there other sites where I can get free web-space that are better? Are there other risks besides my idea getting stolen? Thanks in advance, Mike

they let members post movie clips at renderotica (mostly porno)

You can use YouTube or PutFile. That's what most of the members here use. We don't offer that service because of the high bandwidth that animations consume.

the other good reason not to offer that service is that you'd be deluged by complaints from folks who can't view the animations in their browsers, due to the tendency of animators to use whatever codec they please (no standardisation, unlike jpegs, which can be viewed in any browser).

There is also Sony Acid Planet.  They have FREE and paid accounts.  The FREE account limits you to 20mb uploads and the paid is 100mb.  The paid account cost $50/year so that's like $4/month.

Oh yeah, and before anyone jumps, that limit is file size not total storage size.  This is a limit on the size of a single file you may upload.

For a streaming server alternative, check out Wimpy Player for Flash FLVs or SWFs. It uses a progressive download which is similar to a streaming server from the perspective of the person viewing the content.  Anyone who needs to protect their content should be aware that the media files are downloaded to the viewer's computer.

The player comes in PHP and ASP formats, and playlist or single play versions.

If you have your own website, or you are thinking about getting your own website, there is an excellent program designed for getting your QuickTime animations online.  You must have a website to upload your finished webpages.  There are lots of video demos on the eZedia website so check it out and see just how easy it is to create a website and include your animations.  Let me say again this program is designed for placing QuickTime movies/animations into a webpage/website.

To see how easy it is to put your videos onto your website look at the following training videos is this order.  At the bottom of the page you will the section **eZedia QTI Training Videos**.  Select **eZediaQTI 2.0 Basics** and watch this video first so you will know how to build a project.  Next select **How To Upload an eZediaQTI Project** which is located second to the last on the bottom of the page.  Now you know how easy it is to create a project and publish your video onto the net.  You can see the other training videos that interest you or you can check out the gallery and see what others have done.

I was checking out the WimpyPlayer.  It looks interesting.  I'm going to have to give a try.  On their site they also list a free video file coverter thats available so you can convert your video files over to flash video format.  The price is certainly right!
