Subject: Transparency Issues with Non-PhotoReal Renders in Carrara 5

I'm new to Carrara 5 so while I bet this has been brought up before- I don't know what the answer is...

Why do Poser characters come in with their eyes DARK?

And what is the fix for this?

It shows up in NPR renders also- with HEAVY EYEBROWS and even a weird X-RAY like effect on the mouth area- you can actually see the TEETH under the skin...!

What's causing this?

Here's the 'ol DAZ Dragon- renders fine in Photorealistic mode- but....

...if you render in NPR mode the UNDERSIDE of the wing does not render with shading or color-- only the TOP part renders correctly (this is true of all the NPR settings I have tried)...

What what is the fix to make the Dragon wings appear as SOLID- so they can be NPR'ed...?

The thing with the eyeballs being black may have to do with a bit of geometry over the eyes to help simulate specularity. On M2 I believe it's called "Eyeball" and on the Millenium figures
I think it's LeftCornea and RightCornea. Set the Alpha on both of those to transparent and it should go away.

I've had a similar problem with those blasted UpperEyebrows that you're having. They even appear in ToonPro. One solution might be to import the figure using Native Import so you have better control in overriding the default settings for Non-Photo rendering. Override the defaults and then set them to full transparency and it ought to work. In theory.

I hope that helps! Good luck!

I think the problem can be resolved if you check the "light through trans." in the render room.

ren_mem ( ) posted Fri, 16 June 2006 at 8:32 PM

Usually the light thru trans is the culprit, but I don't really use the npr or toon stuff. Check the second light thru trans option if you use any GI options.

No need to think outside the box....

I think SmallFry is on to it as the "Light through Transparency" option is not available in the NPR render dialog... I'm trying some of the mesh mapping alternatives as the best hope...

If you import via native and use the proper light thru trans options...I haven't seen a problem since 5.03, I think. If you search the forum you will see it has come up alot. I think native is the best way to go personally for most situations because you can save and tweak your shaders etc...Also, some textures for cornea's use a map in the color channel... in general you want to remove that and tweak the corneas like the other textures.

When I import via Native- I am told to search for every single OBJ--- one at a time--- why can't Carrara find the path for everything and load it all? It seems like if you load via Native you are forced to construct the Poser scene all over again from lots of pieces spread all over the place...

ren_mem ( ) posted Sat, 17 June 2006 at 3:38 PM · edited Sat, 17 June 2006 at 3:39 PM

I don't have that issue, but some people do. I use D|S not poser. This is obviously a path issue. Sorry to say posers file formats and runtime layouts are a mess. If the files aren't including full paths this can be a problem. Often having the obj and textures together help, but your real problem may be you are importing an obj. For native you should import cr2 usually.
