Subject: How would you do an explosion in space?

vulcanccit ( ) posted Sun, 02 July 2006 at 10:43 PM · edited Mon, 10 February 2025 at 8:18 AM

I posted a pic in the Vue forum called "Too Close To Home".  It is a Star Trek pic with the Enterprise and a Klingon...I have a little phaser blast hitting the klingons wing.   I tried to make an explosion, but im not too happy with it.   I used several terrains mixed together with some glowing volcanic material and some other colors...  but what I think I need is some kind of exploding cloud or clouds.  I do not know how to put a cloud in the scene directly short of an alpha plane, but I dont know...im fishing in the dark here.  WHat would you experts suggest?

well it would help to read a bit in the manual...I just found the cloud tutorial...using page 412...this mixed with the volcanic glowing material so far is working nicely, but still looking for your expert opinions :)

In space there is no atmospheric resistance, so any explosion will be spherical. I once saw a sci-fi movie that got this right, but alas, I can't remember the name of it.

in space there's little flames and smoke, it sitll happens but not same way it does on Earth..no air except IN the exploding object etc.

Explosions would tend to look like "galaxies", there's no ground, explosions go out in a sphere but from YOUR viewing point you see through a "thickness" giving it a sort of donught look. Imagine a giant glass bubble expanding with a lot of thickness.

that pic I used tori mostly for the nuke detonation, spheres inside for some flames, a plasma material and a spot light powerful with big custom lens flare to fit the epxlosion. The space station nearby has just been crisped by the near miss, flames/smoke driven back by outer edges of shockwave/light.

A Vue SolidGrowth bush can be modified to look like an explosion or weapon hit against the side of a solid object and can be used with a glowing material.

Monsoon has used crossed alpha planes for successful rocket exhausts, fires, etc. - as noted above.

Thank you to all! I modified the Monsoon explosion to do what I had in mind...please check it out in the Vue Gallery!  I like it at least :)
