THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: The Flying Scotsman Project

TheBryster ( ) posted Sun, 04 March 2007 at 5:50 PM

*If you use the 'c' function, could you not export it, turn it into a 3ds in some other program

*2 things... the export/import option works of course, but atm the imported mesh is not stable or in fact solid. It will not obey the 'Make solid when booleaned' command.

Whether or not that would negate the Bryce factor is perhaps a moot point. I'd rather not risk it.

Pipes.....mmmmmm.....giving away my secrets here......seriously, they come from a collection of 'enhanced prims' available for anyone in the free stuff and were resident on my hdd BEFORE I started the challenge. The 'u' shape and the 90degree bends I mean. The straight pipes are just Bryce cylinders.

BTW do you wanna see the whole wireframe?

I think everyone would love to see the wireframe, I would.  I'm curious to see how organized your've managed to keep all the boundry boxes.  I tried a large modelling job in Bryce once...just once.  It got so cluttered and confusing that I had to struggle to finish it.

Death_at_Midnight ( ) posted Sun, 04 March 2007 at 7:27 PM

I would also like to see a wireframe. Those things can become extremely wild!

Amazingly, that's a purty wireframe...it's all nice and tidy...no stray polies anywhere :)  You can see all the work that you've put into this so far.  You have a lot of default grey family in there, hope that doesn't bite you in the ...leg later on.

TheBryster ( ) posted Sun, 04 March 2007 at 8:06 PM

I do use families, but when I've finished working on a group I default to grey otherwise I'd run out of colours..................I also make sure I put a title in the groups, like 'Buffer Assembly' or 'Smoke Stack Assy'. This helps a lot later when I'm adding other pieces.

nice! that wireframe is pretty clean. Though wouldnt it be easier organizing materials by family colors 'n such?

Just starting to set up the wheels and YES! I know they look crappy, but I was playing with metaballs to see if that was a viable methd of creating them.

I said the wheels in the posts above were crappy. I've now started to work on them. The spokes and outer diameter of the hub are all metaballs. I'm working on the inner surface of the rim now using the same methods. Then I have to turn the thing around and do the back faces. It isn't perfect but I'm getting there. Metaballs are very tricky and it's taken me three days to get this far........! C&Cs welcome.

Most impressive....controlled metaball modelling.  They can be buggers to get to behave but looks like you just about got it tamed.  I know I would not have the patience.

Death_at_Midnight ( ) posted Tue, 20 March 2007 at 12:56 PM

It so far looks impressive, that wheel. I'm curious... why metaballs over cylindar?

I'm wondering how the whole train would look abandoned and covered in ivy. This will be a very good model to have around. Lots of possibilities.

TheBryster ( ) posted Tue, 20 March 2007 at 2:19 PM · edited Tue, 20 March 2007 at 2:32 PM

D@M: Wheels like this were made in castings ie: cast iron. This gave an almost organic feel to them, with one part 'flowing' into another. I couldn't get prims to behave like that.

Besides, I think it's important that we all learn how metaballs work. The trick, if you can call it that, is to use about ten times more m/balls than you  might at first think, but even a single, small metaball can make a heck-of-a difference - as I've recently found out.

What would help is if I could get a negative object to interact with a positive metaball. So if anyone knows if this is possible..............?

To date I have used metaballs to create the handrail on the front door of the smokebox and the rim around the bottom of the smokestack.

Thanks for looking, taking an interest and for your comments!

OH! And you cover my loco with ivy and I'll strangle your ass.........

Death_at_Midnight ( ) posted Tue, 20 March 2007 at 2:44 PM

@TheBryster: Are you asking about a regular primative boolean cut with a metaball? Or doing a boolean cut with two metaballs?

Someone said something recently about pressing shift or so, at the time a metaball is clicked from the object menu to get a negative metaball.. but i never tried this.

TheBryster ( ) posted Tue, 20 March 2007 at 2:49 PM · edited Tue, 20 March 2007 at 2:49 PM

I looked this up. You can created NEGATIVE metaball, but I need to use a NEGATIVE OBJECT to cut into a POSITIVE metaball.............not sure if this is possible.

I'm sure there is a tips&tricks thread somewhere.

If the metaballs are still problematic, it might be a lot easier to do with terrains.

Not too much done this week. I had trouble making sure the bogey wheels were correct. I've started on the bogey assembly now, but I don't have much in the way of reference shots so this will be a bit tricky. It seems that these small wheels had their own springs in much the same way as an automobile. Then it's on to the main leaf-springs for the main driving wheels. C&Cs welcome as always.  I really do appreciate all your comments. ;-)  Click for the bigger pic!

If any of you are interested in the overhaul of 4472, you can go to this link and see a week-by-week photo-blog of the workshops at the National Railway Museum in York.

This blog has helped me enormously because I couldn't find any pics of the front bogie assy or really detailed shots of the mainframes until now.
