Subject: How do I get windows xp to associate pz3 files with Poser?

I know how it is SUPPOSED TO WORK, but I tried that and it is not working.  Once I have assigned the Poser exe to open the Poser pz3's, it just goes back to not recognizing them.   I have a legal registered copy of XP Pro and Poser 6.

What do you mean by "assign Poser's exe" to open a PZ3.   You open Poser and then you go to file goto open out comes the browser menu goto the folder where your PZ3 is and click it....

If windows (not Poser) is telling you something is wrong, then you might have some corruption somewhere in the window's folder perhaps....    or some DLL out to lunch....

The best way to assign is by using the Folder Options (in the Control Panel).  Go to the File Types tab and look for PZ3.  Click once on it and hit the 'Change..." button.  This will allow you to assign the file type to the selected executable.  To retain this association, make sure to check "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file".  OK out.

With the "Advanced" option, you can be more specific by setting up commands that will be accessible in Explorer's right context menu (etc.), but this shouldn't be necessary for the default "open" command.

If the association still isn't retained, there are two possibilities:

  1. Some other program is automatically stealing (setting) the association.  Usually, it will tell you that 'some of the associated files type are associated with other programs...' in cases where the association keeps being stolen.

  2. Corruption.  The corruption could be system, munge, viral, registry (most likely).  Associations are stored in the registry.  If the registry is corrupt or not being saved properly, that would be cause for the association not to stick.

C makes it easy to shoot yourself in the foot. C++ makes it harder, but when you do, you blow your whole leg off.

I had the same problem.  My .pz3 icons looked like word pad ones or acrobat reader or something.

Install Poser 6 again, and make sure you install all of the Poser updates....SR2 and SR3.

It should work after that.

Two other threads dealing with the same issue.

When you right click on the .PZ3 > Open With > Choos Program > Poser > Before you click OK make sure that little box near the bottom, that says "Always use the selected
program..." is checked.

I tried all the suggestions and nothing worked until I installed the SR3 update which did the trick.  Yes I checked the always use button.  Thanks to everyone for being so eager to help me out.:thumbupboth:
