Subject: Looking for tattoos on maps

Ghostofmacbeth ( ) posted Sun, 12 November 2006 at 11:27 AM · edited Fri, 27 December 2024 at 6:25 AM

I am trying to find a japanese full arm tattoo someplace for the David (or other unimesh people) Or even something similar and on the arm. Most of the sets I find are just a singular tattoo on the stomach or something and they don't have much on the arms (seam issues I am sure) I just like the Japanese style tings but something else might work. Thanks

You could do what I did for my Yakuza Women series, whidh was to browse some tattoo and Body art sites.  I then downloaded photos of some real tattoos, and then applied them to the texture in Photoshop.  They're not always the most Japanese of tattoos, but they look neat.

Exactly what I did David. Gave up looking for free body textures with tatoos that I liked, though there are some tatoos around. Suggest you go with David's idea, worked for me anyway.

When I apply a tattoo, I first load it into photoshop, enlarge it between 400-800 times, and carefully erace (as well as possible) all traces of the original person's skin between the markings.  Then I load the tattoo onto whatever figure's texture I want to use, and save everything as a PSD.

For areas of the back, I'd recommend that one work with V2/M2 textures, and then UTC them to V3 or M3 if that is the figure desired.  That way, one advoides haveing to split a tattoo image in half and then trying to match up seams.

I apply my tattoos in layers, usually three.  The first layer is usually a burn color layer, over which a I apply an Overlay layer, followed by a Normal layer, but set at between 50%-85% opacity.

The following link will show the results of one ofmy efforts.

Those tattoos look very good David. I am a heavily tattooed woman myself, and my problem with most character's tattoos is that they do not look like they are in the skin. More sticker-like, I guess. Yours look great, very realistic. Lovely job!

Thanks everyone. This is for a quickie and I didn't want to totally spend hours and hours on a tattoo trying to get the seams right. That is why I was looking for package. I have already used the one for Hiro in something so I was looking for another one but I will probably have to go back to that one.

If you're not set on a unimesh character and not opposed to using Koji, there's Ronin for Koji... he has much ink ;)

What is the purpose of the burn color layer? Does it matter if you are using just a black tatoo? I've always used a normal layer at about 50% opacity over the tatoos. (Actually, sometimes I use an additional selection at a higher opacity -- the opacity which works for one tatoo doesn't always work for another.

One hint that I will make is that if the original skin doesn't come with a bump map, use the original for a bmp map rather than the tatooed version. (Same goes for eye makeup.) I have an otherwise very nice render where it looks like the character troweled on the mascara ...

As a side note, I also paint miniature figures, and I usually do tatoos on them with a fine felt-tip, and then paint over with the base skin tone mixed with clear (Future Floor Acrylic) to get the same effect of the tatoo being in the skin.

I find that a burn layer tends to sharpen the detail of the tattoo.

Yeah, I have Koji and I used that set but I don't have any clothes for him so that is out. Nice texture though.
