Subject: User Name Change: What happens to the old one?

MikeJ ( ) posted Fri, 17 November 2006 at 5:42 PM · edited Mon, 06 January 2025 at 1:20 PM

Hey I'm just wondering, if I buy a new user name, can I still "own" the rights to my current one and use it as a clone account?
Or does it just get retired, like really good athletes's numbers?

Is there a netiquette for doing it "legally" like this, for ten bucks? I mean, would I be obligated to tell people who I was, or is it OK to just make them wonder, "where the hell was I when this guy  I never heard of was posting 12,000 times?" ?

Also, I read in the Poser forum someone suggested a list - some kind of directory, I guess - to help keep track of who became whom. Seems like an obvious idea, but if such a list is created for public consumption, could a User Name Changeling opt out of being included, for pivacy reasons, like the telemarketing No Call list?

Miss Nancy ( ) posted Fri, 17 November 2006 at 5:45 PM

It appears they're retaining the old usernames of the last few folks who have changed theirs. they may well be clone accounts, meaning the old username still has a distinct password that they also save. I dunno if they can retain the same password when they pay to change their username.

StaceyG ( ) posted Fri, 17 November 2006 at 6:01 PM

We do "reserve" the old username in the majority of cases, just so no one else can take a members old name and start any trouble.... The person that had the old username cannot access this account so they can't use it as a clone.

Yes I am going to make a list and put a link on the sidebar so members can keep up, LOL. I guess if you want to not be added to that list you could email/site mail me and let me know. I don't see any reason that you have to be included if you feel strongly about it.

Has anyone taken "dungbeetle23" yet?

MikeJ ( ) posted Sat, 18 November 2006 at 2:08 PM

In all seriousness, why is there no option for checking for availability of a desired name?
There is a selection for a first choice and a second choice, even, but it seems to me that once you supply CC info and submit the order, that's it, and you're stuck with what you get - maybe your second choice.
I'm not trying to be antagonistic here, really, but that's like going to the supermarket and asking the butcher for a ribeye, but getting a sirloin instead, at ribeye cost.

So, why is there no availability-check field, to see if your First Choice is even available? Surely that's got to be a pretty simple thing to implement, not to mention, obvious.

StaceyG ( ) posted Sat, 18 November 2006 at 2:10 PM

We may be able to make that functionality available in the near future but as of now we added the "choices" box

MikeJ ( ) posted Sat, 18 November 2006 at 2:24 PM

Well, you see, if you sign up here as a new member and select your user name, it immediately tells you that you can't have a name if someone already has it. At least I assume it does, as I haven't actually tried it since the new software was put online, but nevertheless, that shows the functionality is already there.
Unless it's a matter of maybe the marketplace software just works differently? That I could see.
However, FWIW, I think that functionality should have been included from the beginning.
Why would y'all have not considered such a thing that would seem to be so obvious?

StaceyG ( ) posted Sat, 18 November 2006 at 2:52 PM

It does do that upon registration but that the username change programming works differently. It was brought up but will take some time and thought before it can be added into the Product username change. I'm not a programmer so I can't tell you the specifics but I do know that just because its there on the new member sign up, doesn't make it easily ready for the username product but as to the reasons behind that, I'm not entirely sure, not understanding the whole programming thing.

thefixer ( ) posted Sat, 18 November 2006 at 2:55 PM

MikeJ you can do just as you said, I had about 6 new names I was considering so I put each of them into the "member search", If that name doesn't exist, it says so and that way you will know if you can have it or not.

Of the 6 I tried, 2 were already members!! so I knew I couldn't use them!

StaceyG ( ) posted Sat, 18 November 2006 at 2:58 PM

Keep in mind that the member search will work to a certain extent BUT it only pulls back members that have logged in in the last 12 months. The member search doesn't pull back all registered members in the database due to performance reasons.

MikeJ ( ) posted Sat, 18 November 2006 at 3:02 PM

Fair enough, Stacey. :)

Fixer, I imagine that'd work to a certain extent, but, as is warned on the page for it:

** "Using the Member Search feature on the side bar may not return accurate results since it only returns results for members that have logged in within the last year."**

Only some of us do. I see you got in under the "double-capital letter bug", so you're in luck...for now.

DDevant ( ) posted Sat, 18 November 2006 at 5:32 PM

I'm a little confused having read the other thread on this subject. I'm new here so I'm not sure if this is a spoof thread or if it's real and if it is real does that mean we are going to have to pay for our names?

StaceyG ( ) posted Sat, 18 November 2006 at 5:52 PM

If you want to change your username to something other than "DDevant", then yes you the cost is $10.00

Please see the information in the Front Page Article link below.

MikeJ ( ) posted Sat, 18 November 2006 at 6:57 PM

"If you want to change your username to something other than "DDevant", then yes you the cost is $10.00"

Far as I know, that's not entirely true. To clarify, if you wnat to change your user name and have it point tou your gallery, blog, marketplace stuff, number of posts, and so on - essentially everything which makes you "You" here, then, yes, you have to pay for that service.

But, you could always open a new account in the normal way, like you did when you joined, and that would be free, except you'd be starting fresh.
The advantage to this scheme is that old-timers reatain  all their information, just under a different name

StaceyG ( ) posted Sat, 18 November 2006 at 7:07 PM

Well techinically that is true but since we highly discourage doing that for multiple reasons then I answered the question he asked about "changing" the current username not about setting up a new account:)

DDevant ( ) posted Sat, 18 November 2006 at 7:58 PM

OK I think I understand now though I'm not sure why an old timer or anyone else would pay $10 to change their name on a web site. Still I guess I have a lot to learn
Think I'll go back to browsing the galleries. It's less surreal :)

MikeJ ( ) posted Sat, 18 November 2006 at 8:12 PM

Content Advisory! This message contains nudity

If you want to argue technicalities, Stacey, I'd point out that he was obviously a n00b, and asked, specifically, "...does that mean we are going to have to pay for our names?"

Of course, you might also make a point that he already knew he hadn't paid anything and, yet, had a user name...

And, to answer your question, to wit: "Where are you going with this?", I don't know, but there's some kind of point to be made - I can almost taste it. Maybe sooner or later. ;-)

StaceyG ( ) posted Sat, 18 November 2006 at 8:20 PM

Well since we were talking about the username change in this thread that is why I responded specifically about that. And in my first response to him I said "If you want to CHANGE your username".....

Quit trying to give me a hard time, my head is starting to hurt:) heehee

You and fixer will be the death of me!!!!

MikeJ ( ) posted Sat, 18 November 2006 at 9:02 PM

Head hurting? Extra-strength Acetominephen (sp?) works pretty well.

Of course, by now, you've got that Renderosity Headache which prolly not much can fix, short of a long vacation at a place specifically void of Posericity.

In spite of what you may have heard or surmised, I don't want to be the death of anyone...That is, so long as it can't be directly traced back to me. :-)

StaceyG ( ) posted Sat, 18 November 2006 at 9:08 PM

:)  Oh so this headache that won't go away could possibly be cured with a vacation. Can you please pass on your prescription for a vaction for me to my higher ups? heehee j/k

And I'm pretty tough, no dying here..just picking on you and fixer cause I think y'all might like to pick on me!!!

MikeJ ( ) posted Sat, 18 November 2006 at 9:55 PM

Well, you have proved yourself to be highly pick-on-able, so I do what I do. Can't speak for the fixer guy though.

I'll email both Tim and Tammy and demand that you get a vacation. Can't guarantee that'll work, but I'm sure that coming from a respected member-in-good-standing, it might help...
..Umm, on second thought, scratch that, you're prolly on yer own, far as the vacation goes. ;-)

StaceyG ( ) posted Sat, 18 November 2006 at 10:17 PM

Dang it, I was counting on your power to get me my vacation:(  Well I guess on to Plan B (once I figure out what that is, lol)

MikeJ ( ) posted Sat, 18 November 2006 at 10:25 PM · edited Sat, 18 November 2006 at 10:27 PM

How 'bout changing your username and maybe faking them out, and then blending into the background of some exotic resort somewhere? Or, maybe just at home, roughing it, perhaps without servants, but at least headache-free?

That probably wouldn't work...BUT.. if it did, it'd be kinda cool, if you think about it. ;-)

StaceyG ( ) posted Sat, 18 November 2006 at 10:37 PM

Oooh that is a good idea. I might try that, LOL

MikeJ ( ) posted Sat, 18 November 2006 at 10:50 PM

For your own sake, don't try it, OK? 'cause it ain't gonna work - someone will see this thread and blow the whistle, thinking, "Hmm, has anyone noticed that "StaceyG23" bears a strong resemblance to StaceyG...and, speaking of which, where is she? Not at her desk, not in the hall or the break room... hasn't called in sick...hey, wait a minute, she's slipped us!"
And from that point on, it'll be chaos, and when it comes out that you cloned yourself for some time in Rio, all hell woulda broken loose by the time they figgered it out. ;-)

Hawkfyr ( ) posted Sun, 19 November 2006 at 1:04 AM

I think I may actually have a legitimate, serious question for once.

Shortly after I signed up here, back when hector was just a pup, I had always wanted to change just one thing about my user name.

I wanted to change the "Case" of the "h" in hawkfyr, to a capital "H". So it would be "Hawkfyr" (This is the only site that my name has a lower case "h").

But...I just did a member search for "Hawkfyr" (with an upper case "H"). and it returned "Me".(hawkfyr)

So..if all I wanted was my "h" changed to an "H", would I be able too?

After all...the search says "Hawkfyr" already exists"

Oh..and are there any price breaks on changing just one letter from a lower case, to an upper case?

Okay..that was two questions.

pearce ( ) posted Sun, 19 November 2006 at 9:42 AM

Looks like the search software doesn't distinguish between upper and lower case. It isn't simply matching some characters, because looking for  "awkfyr" returns not-found.

Hawkfyr ( ) posted Sun, 19 November 2006 at 5:00 PM

hmmm...this could be "awk"ward.

StaceyG ( ) posted Sun, 19 November 2006 at 6:09 PM

If the name is the exact same with just the "case" being what you want to change, email admin@renderosity.com and I think we can do this quite easily because it won't be actually changing your name but just the case. The site doesn't distinguish between lower case and upper case now like it used to so someone could register with "Hawkfyr"

Really, Stacey?  That could be very worrisome for many, many people here.  Imagine the fallout if people started registering names of popular artists by simply changing the case in a user name.

Or am I reading your reply wrong?

billy423uk ( ) posted Sun, 19 November 2006 at 8:33 PM

i think it means hawkfyr and Hawkfyr would be classed as the same name terra.

billy423uk ( ) posted Sun, 19 November 2006 at 8:52 PM

stacey,

if it doesn't  distinguish between hawkfyr and Hawkfyr doesn't tha mean anyone registering as Hawkfyr would recieve a name already taken notice? as it would assume it was the same as hawkfyr.

I'm wondering the same thing.(Not that I'm a popular artist or anything).

But if I'm to understand this, it means that I could go get a clone account as "Hawkfyr"(Upper case), but I would have no history under that name. (Hmmm..could be a "Good" thing...lol)

AND !!!

If I do go get that name,(just to reserve it) and then want to pay to get my "h" turned into an "H", the system would say that "Hawkfyr already exists...No can do amigo..you screwed yourself by reserving "Hawkfyr"...Ya shoulda bin a dauk-tah boubie"...and other such teasing.

OR !!!

Can one have his/her name's "History"  migrated, or transferred to an already existing (Clone) account, so long as he or she can prove it is in fact really them?

I'd hate to show up here everyday to see what I said that day.

I formally, here and now, reserve the name "Hawkfyr" (With an upper case"H").

Oh..and I call "Shotgun"

I call and I call no changes...ally ally outs in free.

i doubt you could get a clone account with Hawkfyr tom.
my nic is billy423uk amd i was allowed to sign in as Billy423uk. so if anyone else tried it they would find both names taken. effectively you're already known as hawkfyr and Hawkfyr. if you went to your profile and typed in Hawkfyr for the nic it may show as that in the forums

billy
oops...my mistake you can't edit your name re upper or lower case, i just tried

StaceyG ( ) posted Mon, 20 November 2006 at 10:30 AM

Okay I must have said that wrong. If you have the name "hawkfyr" no one can register with Hawkfyr. It is the spelling of the word not the case that its looking for.
