Subject: Name changes

Francemi ( ) posted Sun, 19 November 2006 at 8:53 AM · edited Mon, 03 February 2025 at 3:55 PM

Ok, I haven't been here often lately and I seem to have missed something: what's this about all those name changes? Can I join the dance? How do we change our username here?

Thanks.

Hi, Francemi ;) Renderosity now offers a program to change your username for $10.00.  Those of us on staff that have changed our usernames have made announcements to let everyone know ;)

Thanks Jen, I am not "bored" (re: Casette's reply) enough to spend a $10 I don't have on a whim but I was intrigued. loll

Ah ha, it's a money making scheme. $10 for typing in two names and hitting enter. Must be nice.

Due to the childish TOS changes, I'm not allowed to link to my other products outside of Rendo anymore :(

OK So bitch about it. Decide that you don't want to spend the $10. And GTFO

Seriously guys. It's FINE if you don't want to pay. Personally I've been asking for this since 2002 and I'm HAPPY that it's finally available. I Missed it when the price was $25 but I would have paid that as well. I'm glad I only had to pay ten bucks but I DON'T CARE IF IT'S FREE ON OTHER SITES, ok? It hasn't been AVAILABLE here before so I don't mind paying now that it's finally possible.

And since it hasn't been an option before I THINK (but then again I'm probably stupid) that it's more than just a few key presses.

And in any case.. IF It was free.. the "I'm now..... " threads would be in the zilions here. Constantly. So IMO it's a WISE move to make people pay for it. Keeps down the "changes on a whim" at least.

I do not think it is stupid to pay to change your username. IF I had 10$ to spend and IF I had a good reason to change my name, I would pay too. As it is, I prefer to keep my name since my website has the same name and everywhere I'm known either as Francemi or France.

I thought it was a kind of a game... I don't have much time these days to visit forums and I couldn't find the announcement about this and I kept seeing posts about "Someone is now someone else".

BTW, I never could write your other username right, TrekkieGrrrl.

Well, it's free and easy to do at DAZ, and people still don't change usernames all the time.
I guess that except some very specific cases, people prefer to stick with the name they're known with. Else it defeats the purpose of having one, doesn't it...

Now why all the Rendo admins/mods/whatever decided to change their names is another question... evil smile

JenX ( ) posted Mon, 20 November 2006 at 5:39 AM

Well, some of us just needed a change, and going out and making a new account isn't really an option for a Staff member.  shrug
I've been MorriganShadow in one way or another since......actually, I think it was 1999 instead of 1998.  Yeah, because I was pregant.  And totally addicted to RPG's.  Put the two together.....It's not that I thought it was a dumb name.  It was a freaking long name...........and, it didn't represent "Me" anymore.  Plus, for my entire marriage, I was MorriganShadow.  Now that I'm divorced, I need to leave that name behind, along with my legal married name.  I'm a completely different person.
So, I took the name of my offline business, shortened it (It's JenX Digital Imaging), and used it here.
I'm not bored, not looking to be faddish.  Some people change their legal names when they go through life-altering changes.  I could, but I've grown attached to my name ;)
Or, you know, I could say "The person who comes up with the best conspiracy theory wins candy!"  But I won't, because, well, I'd be really scared with what you'd come up with

Making a new account isn't a viable route for a vendor either. So I have been waiting for this possibility for a long time! Like JenX, my old name just wasn't "me" anymore. Actually it never was in the time I've been here, I just chose it because it WAS the screen name I used at that time, though I was starting to use TrekkieGrrrl more and more. In any case, Ern Yoka has always been my Star Trek name and not my "3D name", so ... well.

And yeah I know it's free on other sites. But this place isn't "The other sites", so why bother about it? As long as people are willing to pay (and I certainly am) why SHOULDN'T they make money from it? This is  a business after all.

It is, and you definitely aren't. 😄 It's a very old database that could probably stand to be re-designed, but that would be an undertaking more massive than the PHP changeover, and who wants to go through something like that?

I don't care what it costs, either; my old name was kinda stupid, and now I've got a user name that matches my real nickname that I've used everywhere else in my life, and I'm much happier with it. Boredom had nothing to do with it, I've been wanting a new user name for a long time, and now I've got it. Happy, happy, joy joy.

some of us might have done it to line up with their website/merchandise/ect...kind of a buisness decision, so to speak. 😉

i feel it's sooooo ironic that the same people that are constantly ridiculing 'rosity and dissing the whole thing are the same ones that live here and are constantly posting.
call me funny, but i see that as ironic.

"it's a very old database that could probably stand to be re-designed" I don't do mySQL, use SQL Server myself, but I don't see how writing a stored proc to do a name update would be that arduous, even if you had to do multiple DBs. Still, I think I read that mySQL only got stored procedures in a fairly recent version so who knows. I'm still a bit leery about it being a major undertaking for a good DBA though.
