Subject: Mat Pose Editor and Bump Maps...can it work?

MikeJ ( ) posted Sun, 10 December 2006 at 8:30 AM · edited Sun, 05 January 2025 at 4:25 PM

I was wondering if anyone could give me an explanation of why the utility Mat Pose Editor doesn't apply bump maps in P6? A bump map will load into the program, and looking at the *.pz2 file in a text editor, it appears to be there, full path and all, but it's not applied to the figure in P6.
For example, this is a  section of the MAT *.pz2 of V4, which I loaded as a character into MPE, and saved the .pz2 file:

material 2_SkinTorso
        {
        KdColor 1 1 1 1
        KaColor 0.078431 0 0 1
        KsColor 0 0 0 1
        TextureColor 1 1 1 1
        NsExponent 12
        tMin 0
        tMax 0
        tExpo 0.6
        bumpStrength 1
        ksIgnoreTexture 1
        reflectThruLights 1
        reflectThruKd 0
        textureMap ":Runtime:textures:DAZ:Characters:MilWom:V4:V4StTorsoM.jpg"
                0 0
        bumpMap ":Runtime:textures:DAZ:Characters:MilWom:V4:V4StTorsoB.jpg"
                0 0
        reflectionMap NO_MAP
        transparencyMap NO_MAP
        ReflectionColor 1 1 1 1
        reflectionStrength 1
        }

It wouldn't be because of the zeros, would it? They're there with the texture, as well, and that loads fine. The text is wrapped in this box for space, but not in Notepad, if that makes any difference.

Second, is there something I'm just doing wrong, or does it just not work for some reason?
If not, is there a program that does work for loading bump maps and everything else? I'm not concerened about "free", I just need "working". ;)

Thanks for any replies....

Attached Link: Matpose to Material collection and back again

Does the matpose file also have the node tree under the above lines? I've occasionally had issues with older matpose files (P4 simple mat type) where the bump doesn't always apply itself correctly.

If the image map node for the bump is there but not connected, I'd say connect it and save yourself a material collection and remove the offending matpose. Or just load it up yourself and do the same. You could also experiment with turning the matpose file into a P6 material collection to see if the problem still persists that way. If you prefer matpose files, you can also convert any mc6 files to a matpose just as easy.

If it's a matpose edit program funkiness....I can't help there. I stopped using it way back when. Found it much easier to set my materials up in P5 and just edit down an extra copy of the figures cr2 file. And now Material collections in P6 make it even easier.

I've attached a short little text file on converting between the two. (and all word wrap does in Notepad is make it so you don't have to scroll left or right to read the file...so that shouldn't have anything to do with it)

Sorry, Mike, but MPE doesn't support anything above Poser 5 and if you enable the ver 5 support it won't write a file for ver 4.  That's one of the reasons I went over to Quickmat.

Thank you for the info, Realmling, and for the text file. :)
I'm gonna mess around with that. I used to make my own mat files with notepad, but when I heard about MPE, I got lazy. Maybe it's time to get un-lazy again. ;)

Victoria Lee, thanks, I hadn't thought of that. I have Poser 5 too, but I haven't used it in ages.

Hehe. You can still be a little lazy....just save out a material collection and you're good to go. Can also just have one file and do a find replace for different textures so you don't have to do things completely over and over again. ^_~

It's what I do. I save myself one matcollection, and then if I feel like making matposes for a freebie, I convert and then replace in the one file for multiple textures. Only part that takes time is rendering out images for thumbs...because I'm just slightly OCD/AR. =P
