Subject: Similar Artist names

mccoyneil ( ) posted Tue, 19 December 2006 at 3:46 AM · edited Fri, 15 November 2024 at 6:35 AM

I see that there is now both a "Lululee"  and a new member "Lulu Lee".

I say let it be - I don't want anyone to be made to change his/her name.
But, maybe for future members,
let's prevent this confusion from happening in the future.

I found Lisbeth and Lisbeth10 just a couple of hours ago.  I was trying to give credit for a gallery posting.

I don't see how you can get around this issue, happens everywhere. You only need to change 1 letter or number for the whole word to be different as far as a database goes, that's my understanding, please correct me if I'm wrong.

I've seen it on other sites where new members take a very similar name to a terrific artist so as to try and get more hits from people mistaking the name!

Yup, getting a computer to decide that two names are "similar" is MUCH harder than getting it to see that two are different by a single letter or number. It raises the question of, "what makes two names similar?" The pattern matching abilities of the human brain are utterly remarkable, compared to even the most sophisticated computer programs.

And, on the other side of the coin, shoudl we penalize newcomers who want a certain flavor of name, just because somebody else got there first? If we did that, I couldn't have changed my (stupid) old name to the one I have now. I had to accept a "1" on the end, but I like my new name so much better than my old one. 😄

I used to be jevans69, which was fairly dumb. When I created the name, I never thought about getting involved with uploading images and posting forum messages. I was ever so glad when they made name changing possible. 😄

I just reckon a difference of only a "space character" is just one confusion too far.
It can be hard to see a space character on a web page, when not using a fixed font.
