Subject: Poser/Zbrush/Vue Displacement Maps

PerfectN ( ) posted Wed, 10 January 2007 at 12:45 AM · edited Sat, 01 February 2025 at 3:24 AM

This is rather a multi workflow kind of question. Here is the jist:
Id like to pose a figure in Poser
Import it into Zbrush. Modify the figure (adding more polys, smoothing etc) MAKING a displacement map.
In VUE, import the original unaltered textured figure. Use the displacement map form ZBRUSH in Vue.
CAN THIS BE DONE? IF SO, HOW?
I've looked all over the net and the only tutorial I can find is using zbrush to make morph targets.
Any help would be appreciated.

Best

Well, I made some tests to see how well Vue imports zbrush displacement maps, using the files available at zbrush central ( the low poly sword and its map) and had no success yet.

Hi Bruce,

I don´t tested Displacement Maps in Vue a lot right now, cause there are less to control the Maps. The best way is to go back in Poser and load your Displacement Map that comes from ZBrush in the Material Room in Poser. (don´t  forget to Flip the Map first if necessary, and make it as a Greyscale Picture but don´t touch the 16 Bit, it is really important to have a 16 Bit Map) BTW can Vue handle Maps in 16 Bit depth?

But first, don´t forget to make a Note of your Alpha Depth Factor in ZBrush Alpha in the Bottom. For Example the Alpha Depth Factor is 1.234 in ZBrush, in Poser it is 1:10 Type in 0.1234 for the Displacement Map in Poser Material.

A good Place to start is the ZBrush Central Quicklinks, and the Gnomon Workshops of ZBrush Production Pipeline.

I hope this helps, cause meanwhile my Vue 6 is in the trash can, so I can´t make any more tests in Vue6.
