Subject: Wow - Poser 7 Rocks

I just did a 3 hour render with firefly to the max, ambient occlusion, ray tracing etc. I could never do that in P6, I would get the dreaded memory error constantly.

I have had the programme since it was released, but only finally installed it the other day. All the neg publicity put me off, I was sure I would have problems LOL, but none at all.

I haven't played with any of the other features yet, but I love what I have seen so far.

Sure, there are some bugs in P 7 but none of them is so that it would not be worse to use P7 instead of P6. The memory handling is much much better. I got it on the first day and installed it at once. No more need of P6.

I'm glad to hear you're both pleased with it, I've gone back to using P6 for now as P7 doesn't import correctly into Vue6 at the moment, once that's sorted I'll use it, until then I'm sticking with 6!!

Love Poser 7, no major problems for me yet. I've also found no problems importing into Vue 6 Esprit which is a big plus!

**I have found an issue with skin textures when you render in a high DPI and size. They tend to get that "shredded" effect you would normally see on the elbows and knees...only on the legs and arms, and sometimes face. I talked to Colin Gerbode at E-Frontier, (He's my go-to Guy!!!) and he said that they were aware of the large format render problems and also the default DPI setting (72) which if deviated from can cause issues in a large size or even 800 X 800 render's. These are part of the things the first SR1 should address and fix. **So til then I will use P6, But I LOVE the shadow mapping in P7!!! It is awesome.

I have to agree with the first poster P7 rocks.

I am still gettign used to layers and it is a very powerful feature for animators.   A tutorial would be nice but what I ahve learned so far is great.

The morph tool is very easy and also very powerful.

I have no out of memory issues.

The preview mode is much improved.

I haven't even started using the universal poses.

I only use P7 and won't go back to P6.   IMO This is a huge step forward.

I allways kept bashing on P6 and especially P5.They were useless till SR2.But I am quite lucky with P7.Some Issues, yes but you can still work wth it and create some nice results. No need ripping of your hair.Complainig works  ;)

I have still Poser 6 installed but I haven't used the last three weeks. I'm only using 7 now. I did had some problems but if you know some do and the don'ts it works perfectly.
I love the render speed even with my single-core computer, the seperate render thread improves it even more, you only have to take care that you have enough virtual memory, I allocated too litlle and that caused some renderproblems but after I enlarged it, it ran super.
The seperate runtime handling is much better than P6, I'm thinking to set up seperate runtimes for every figure.
I've been working a lot with the cloth-room, I heard that some people had troubles with it, but there is one thing you have to avoid and that's cancelling a simulation. When you do, close poser  (after saving of course) and start over again, otherwise the program freezes.
There one thing I hate: Poser7. never gives a warning on renderingproblems, when something goes wrong, it does need improvement on error-checking. I like something as: you don't enough virtual memory or similar, now it just stops without giving any reason.

-How can you improve things when you don't make mistakes?

Anniebel ( ) posted Mon, 22 January 2007 at 8:14 PM

I haven't tried the cloth room yet, probably won't have time until next week, same with most of the other features.

The piccie I did, I rendered at 200 dpi, & I didn't notice any shredding. Through I did notice when I opened the image in PS, it said it was 72 dpi, but I think I read about this, & they know about it.

Ok, I have a new computer on order that has the capability of running Poser 7. Normally I don't upgrade to a new version of a problem after only 1 year. However, the talk about increasing render speed is appealing to me.

The machine I have on order has a dual core processor with 2 gigs of memory.

I haven't been paying any attention to the pros and cons of Poser 7 over Poser 6, so can someone please list them here?

Funny Freudian slip :tt2: Some pros:
Rendering can be much, much faster if you have multicore processor (and you will)
Memory management is vastly better than P6
You have the option to set search depth for your runtime, so even if you have a large amount of content, as you drill around in directories in the Poser window, it moves pretty fast if you set it to Middle or Shallow

Some cons:
Cloth room is really, really buggy
Bugs with external binary morph target option corrupting files

Ugh!  The cloth room is my favourite room in Poser!  The only reason I moved up to Poser 6 from Poser 5 was because the cloth room in Poser 6 was able to work with  the Morphing Fantasy Dress as a hybrid and Poser 5 couldn't.

By "buggy", what do you mean? Can you give some examples of the types of problems found in the cloth room?

I read my earlier post before submitting it and I totally didn't see the slip,  LOL

A specific example:
http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=1364153&member
When I have multiple figures in a scene like Tango, cloth will just stop colliding with some parts of a body, e.g. the red dress refused to collide with Kab's collars/shoulders, chest and abdomen - but it was fine with colliding her hips and thighs, and the dress would settle through her torso and gather around her hips.  Same figure, same dress in a less complex scene, and it worked fine - so I had to export the finished simulated dress to OBJ, import it into the "real" scene" to get it eventually done.  For one figure scenes I haven't had this problem, although I don't consider two human figures and two hair items to be THAT complicated, not like I'm asking for a whole lot.
