What are texture templates and why do I need them? They don't seem to be referenced anywhere in the loading process. What are they and why are they included in packages? (I'd like the delete them to clean up my runtimes if they are not necessary)

save 'em. they're the things that one gets when one loads a poser geom object into uvmapper. one uses 'em to create new textures.

These templates are used to create your own texture maps for an object like clothes (and other things).
In a 2D program you can paint in your own textures within the template. When applied they should
fit perfectly as they are mapped to fit the object. If you apply an unmapped texture to a shirt, for example, it will distort (stretch the texture), sometimes it will look OK.
