"When you register to access this library, you allow us to share your information with companies that produce products or services featured in the library--so that such companies may contact you with information and offers regarding their products and services. This enables us to keep the library a free service." it might be worth the extra e-mail load, depending on the list of items they've got. I wonder if this is what happened to the old items at the defunct 3dcafe freestuff section.
Unless I'm missing something there is nothing there when you click on the download link except sponsored websites. Nothing happens when the link is clicked. I'm logged on an such but nothing seems to be there.
Browser settings can sometimes fool up download links. For instance, I have Netscape 7 set up to display no background colors/images, just black text on white, because of my eye problem. So I won't see the link either if I use that browser. But in Netscape 8, where I let the page display the way it wants to, there's no problem, the "button" is not invisible. And yes, you do need to be a member ... but it's free.
The download from ZDNet is basically a prog that serves as a front-end to load the Pelican site into your browser. Kind of a circuitous way to accomplish what clicking on a link would do, but that's the way they did it.
Poking around on the pelican site - I found a couple of links (labeled free and freestuff) that loads a couple of small selections of atavars and meshes that are free. A lot of meshes for sale also. Hard to tell from the pictures provided, but most seem pretty simple.
This direct link may work . . .

These seem to be the free models.Pinky - you left the lens cap of your mind on again.
ZD Publications has earned my ire. Years ago, I got a promo "get a free issue and a mouse pad". I needed a mousepad so I filled out the card and sent it in. The first thing I got in the mail was a bill for a year's subscription, nearly a month later I finally recieved the free mag (the new month's issue was already on the stands), and they NEVER sent the promised mousepad. Needless to say, I didn't subscribed since they did not honor their end of the bargin, but did that stop ZD Publications? Noooooo. For years I recieved bills from them for a magazine subscription. And after that, threatening letters from their legal department. I think it was close to eight years before the bills and threats finally stopped arriving in the mail. Buy a magazne from them? Not even if they were the only publisher on the planet. You can bet they WILL sell your info to as many as they can. And those companies will, in turn, sell it as well.
Don't sweat the petty things, and don't pet the sweaty things! ; )

I just came accross this - Pelican3d Models - Freeware described as; **Overview:** Free 3d models in many formats (RWX, 3ds MAX and OBJ). A collection of 3d models from medieval, fantasy, architecture, military, vehicles, space, aeronautics, and humans and animals in colorful 3d. From acrylics to pixels, Pelican3d. ZDNet is a site more commonly associated with general Computer tech magazines, info, and software, but this DL may be of interest or use to some of us here.Cheers
