Subject: Problem with GND2 by blackhearted

Hello everybody,

I would like to know how can I make the eyes of Bernadette (GND2) point at the main camera? I'm using the "eyes system" that come with GND2 but there seem to be no way to make them point at the main camera. If I try with object - Point at it's like if the eyes just disappear.

Anybody have an idea?!?!

Thank you

Patrick

Applying the Bernadette INJ pose makes the eye materials transparent, as I recall, and you're expected to use the Blackeyes prop that is included with the character package.  The eyes show up under the Props branch of the pulldown on the document window or parameter dials window.

And no, point at doesn't work very well with them.

Hi patboudrum,

You can make something "Point at..." using the:
[menu] "Object" >>> "Point At..." command.

Make sure you have the "object" (body part) selected first.

If the "object" is a body part, make sure that it's bone is "point"ing in the direction that you want the object to "point."

If the "object" is a prop, take it into the Setup Room and add a bone (if necessary) to use in the "Point At..." procedure.

Yeah I think he had figured that out - specifically the Blackeyes prop eyes for V3 don't work very well with the Point At feature, that was what I was getting at.

I don't have GND, but I do have Irina 2.0, & in the readme regarding the Blackeyes, it states

"In order to get 'POINT AT' to work with the Blackeyes, you need to select the figure's default eyes (Right Eye, Left

Eye) and choose Object>Point At>Main Camera. The Blackeyes are parented to the default eyes.

"

How very irritating, that was not in either the docs for GND2 or the Blackeyes standalone item docs.  Probably the OP is making the same mistake I always did, which was to set Point At for the props themselves (which seems to be wrong).  I just gave up trying to use Point At with that character anyway, after I read this in the Blackeyes docs:
"I find the easiest and most effective way to do this is to do them individually, one at a time. "

why is it irritating? its no more complicated than what you would do with V3's or SP3's eyes... select the character's default eyes from the dropdown and choose point at> main camera.

i do go to lengths explaining in the readme why you should not use the point at feature at all (unless you are creating an animation), and explain a quick manual method you can use to get much better results. it is the single thing responsible for the 'lifeless poser stare' in most gallery renders. youll get a far more natural and focused look in the eyes if you manually 'focus' them the way i describe.

eye focus is very subtle... but its also why you can be a foot away from someone talking to them and can tell if they are paying attention to you or daydreaming... looking into your eyes or just looking towards you and focusing somewhere 3 feet behind your head, etc. its extremely subtle and even a millimeter off either way and they are not focused. the first thing someone looks at when they look at a portrait is the eyes, and while you may not consciously notice if they are out of focus your subconscious will definitely pick it up.
i personally loathe the point at feature and feel that it is singlehandedly responsible for the dead lifeless look in the eyes of most poser figures. please, please stop using it.
but if you must... just use point at with the default eyes like you would normally and it will work.. the blackeyes are parented to them :)

cheers,

I'm really sorry Gabriel but it doesn't work for me with the default eyes. I use leye-reye - pointat -main camera but the eyes never move, they always stare in the same direction. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong but I can't find what!

Do you have a tutorial or something like this about your manual method?!? I don't remember seen anything like this in the readme for GND2.

Thank you

Patrick

I use Black Eyes nearly all the time. I use the technique gabriel is talking about and I can vouch for the fact that it is very very subtle. You have to inch the left/right and/or up/down for each eye until they independently look RIGHT AT YOU. You can tell when it is right....the character suddenly comes right out of the screen and snaps alive.

I can not imagine anything that is more worth putting time and effort into than eye focus.

Not to bash your product, which is one of the finest V3 character packages out there, but what bugged me just there was that that information about using Point At with the figure's eyes and not the prop is not in either GND2 or Blackeyes documentation, and it would have been helpful to know.  Maybe you should think about updating the documentation for those two items to include that.
