Grew up in San Diego ... there are a lot of places to see:

Sea World
Seaport Village
Old Town
San Diego Zoo
San Diego Wild Animal Park

Too many places to name, actually, so I'm including a link to the city's site. It really depends on what you want to see while there. If you know where you're staying, you can decide by distance from the hotel.

Sea World is fab, and in old town, I would recommend Croce's if you like good food and/or Jazz

was 7 years ago last time I was there, but I loved both of these places....

Don't forget Father Serra's mission in Mission Valley.  He founded San Diego (grew up there, too).

And if you go to Seaport Village, definitely wander through the Gaslamp section of town right there.  The Kansas City Steak House (seen in Top Gun) has great BBQ.

Maritime museum - visit the Star of India.  It's a cool sailing ship.  There are also several other ships to go on.  Last time there was a Russian sub you could crawl through.  A tight squeeze on some of the hatches, but very interesting.

Zoo is great - I have season passes.  Wish you were here on the weekend.  I could get you in free.  Wild Animal Park is my favorite, but it is not close to downtown - about 40 miles away.

Balboa Park - several very nice museums.

Sea World - you'll have a great time, and Monday's should not be crowded unless it's during spring break or the summer.

Lego Land - although it's designed for kids under 13, mini-land is really neat to see.  They were working on building the Las Vegas Strip on our last visit.  It's located in Carlsbad, about 35 miles north of downtown San Diego.

Have a great time!  Let me know if you have any other questions - I live in San Diego.

If you haven't got a hotel yet, I'd recommend Ocean Beach Hotel--my whole family stayed there when they visited me last june and had a great time.

I think Sea World is totally skippable, but everyone else is recommending it so maybe you'll like it.

If you have a car, I'd defiitely recommend the wild animal park, it should be good this time of year.  Balboa park is great too, that's where the zoo is, plus the aviation museum, natural history, museum of man, the art museum, photo museum, and I think a train museum.  It's also right near Hillcrest (university ave. area) which has a lot of great restaurants and some nice bookstores and coffee shops.  The gaslamp district is also good for food.

Old town is fun too, kinda touristy but historical too.  It's got lots of good food and cute little shops.  For more history, there's the presidio (watch out, the museum closes pretty early) and the mission.  There's also an old lighthouse on Point Loma, which also has some hiking nearby.  There's also hiking in Torrey pines or in a number of the Canyons.

Driving up the coast a ways can be fun too.  I'd take 101 (which isn't technically a highway until LA) instead of 5, it's much more scenic and you can see interesting things to stop and do.  There's a weird little "temple" think up in...Del Mar? that has a nice garden.  Del Mar is cute too, and there are interesting little shops and quiet beaches in the little towns as you go up towards Carlsbad.

Ha LEGO land cool! I am sure I will figure out some of thing to do. SeaWorld sounds fun too. This should be a lot of fun, I just wish I was staying a little longer. Beats the cold at where I am. Thanks for the suggestions everyone! I will definately have to go to coast I miss the ocean. Are there public beaches clost to La Holla?

Victoria_Lee ( ) posted Sun, 11 March 2007 at 11:38 AM

La Jolla is on the coast and has a really nice beach.  Also, Torrey Pines.  Closer to town, you'll find Pacific Beach and Mission Beach (just west of Sea World).  A little farther south is Ocean Beach where we had a beach house when I was a kid.

You won't have to go far from San Diego to go to the coast - the entire town is built on the ocean.  If you visit Seaport Village, it's on the water, as well.

Just be prepared - the prices for admission to Sea World is around $50 per adult but that does include all of the exhibitions as well as the Shamu show.  If you wait until dark, you get a great fireworks display at the Shamu show.  I get discount tickets through work, luckily, because I only live 7 hours away and can make it a day trip when I get the urge for Sea World and the beach.

In downtown La Jolla there's the Cove, which is pretty but if you want beach drive a couple minutes up la jolla shores road and you'll get to La Jolla Shores beach which is much better.  (I think you'll need to turn left off Shores onto camino del oro to get there?)

Just north of that is Scripps, then Blacks (you can't drive there though, and it's quite a walk down the cliff), then Torrey Pines, which is also nice.  South of La Jolla it's a bit rockier, but then there's Pacific Beach, Mission Beach/Mission Bay, Ocean Beach....etc. ;)  You can also go kayaking in the cove--the caves the ads talk about aren't much, but you'll probably see a lot of little sharks.

Not to mention the tide pools in La Jolla.
