Subject: OT - Won the lottery lately??

Anniebel ( ) posted Tue, 13 March 2007 at 6:36 AM · edited Mon, 06 January 2025 at 10:37 PM

Anyone else being inundated with "You've won" type spam lately, it is really annoying.

It used to be emails trying to convince me to enlarge the 'manhood' I don't have, or peddling pharmaceuticals, now it seems to be lotteries.

I wish they would just give up LOL

I'm one of the luckiest people alive it would seem, I've won every lottery going, I've won holidays, round the world trips, cars, tv's, cars with tv's, I've had 30+ distant relative I never knew I had die leaving me as sole benificiary in their wills to the tune of several thousand million dollar pounds, I've even won the chance to have my Mortgage paid off in full (I don't have a mortgage).

all of this has been without my having to enter any competitions at all, all I have to do to claim my countless winnings is to send a small admin fee or my bank details, which I'm in the middle of doing as I type this, yeah right! lol

Am I the only one receiving just one or two SPAM mails a month?
Unbelievable....

Lucifer_The_Dark ( ) posted Tue, 13 March 2007 at 7:10 AM

I get upwards of 20 a day but thankfully most are caught automatically by mailwasher, maybe 1 or 2 a week have to be added to the blacklist.

No SPAM protection needed on my workstations. It's all done on my providers mailserver. Don't know exactly what they do, but apparently they do a good job :)

The frightening thing about these is that there are people out there who will believe them, follow the instructions to the letter & lose everything they own.

Yup, greed brings many to ruin. But what is fascinating is that may of those falling for this scam are highly educated people. Say what you will about those who have gone threw the school of hard knocks but at least they have common sense. IMHO anyone who responds to something out of the blue or has no idea where it's coming from or who sent it is asking for it.

Well there's lots of money to be made from scam emails so it is possible, do you really want to destroy other people's lives though? no I didn't think so ;) we are the good people & that's why most of us will never be rich.

I receive around 10 emails a day offering to sell me something guaranteed to dramatically increase the size of my...uh...naughty bits. Why do these people even bother? They obviously  have access to a pc, so they surely must realize how many others are already peddling this crap. I suppose it's rather sad, in a way.

How did they find out that we needed things like that? eerrrrrrr not that I do need anything like that of course, no really I don't :D

There's only one thing that I know of that can stop spam at the source.

Paid e-mail.

If sending an email to another domain would cost 1 cent per recipient, spam would immediately stop being lucrative.

The first time I received such an email (I think I won a trip to France that time) I went to see. Not that I believed it but just for fun: you had to be a resident of the USA. ;o) So even if I had been tempted, which I was NOT, I didn't qualify. Since that time, I don't even open emails from people I don't know. Most of these emails go directly to the Spam folder (Norton) but those making it to my inbox go there too: manually.

It saddens me to know some people believe this kind of Get rich with a click scheme. But you know it's not only on the Web. This kind of spam have been around for many years before Internet was even an idea in someone's head. In those days it was snail mail but the same text could be read. "You won a trip to Cuba! But HURRY, it is good only for one week and you have to pay a little fee for whatever..." DUH!!!

I used to forward those scam emails to FBI's and reply to those senders letting them know about my action.    But nowadays I'm tired of it all and just blacklist them.

How do people make money sending me some gibberish and a link to buy a "Viagra Patch"?

drifterlee ( ) posted Thu, 15 March 2007 at 12:22 AM

I started getting tons of it after I registered at several 3d sites in the freestuff downloads.
