Subject: Creating a Geodesic Sphere

I am attempting to create a geodesic type sphere, with bump/displacement, over another sphere.  I used the "Lines" function, and tweaked the settings, rotated three different iterations of the lines, but I cannot find any settings that will provide equally sized and equally spaced lines.  Is there a solution, or a better method to achieve my goal?

thanks

greg

I am using Vue 6

Hi Greg, As shown on illustration one way among others would be to use 2 Saw teeth math noises combined in the bump channel.

I  used filters to control the width of the stripes but also their profiles
(whether they are square or rounded)

The screenshot is from Vue5 Infinite but the method applies
to Vue6 also. You would have to check 'displacement mapping'
in the bump tab

If you have any difficulty with my condensed explanation
I can explain it better :)
(I can also send you the file so that you can explore it
juste IM me an e-mail adress)

Polax...i was going nuts there, your idea made total sense but it wasn't working until I realized,...you have to make the mapping SPHERICAL! ;)

I gave it a try with the sawteeth, but once I rotate the second set, I get weirdness, as shown in the attached pic.  Also is a render of a sphere surrounded by Mighty Pete's Shape #1494, which is what I'm trying to get close to.  The mesh is great, but I would like to have one with denser triangles.  Thanks, joechip, for the link, but as you can see, I'm looking for something with a surface made up of triangles, and I want the structure of the dome --the struts.

And here is what I was working on some time ago, and want to go back to, now that translucency seems to be working much better.

After taking a break to run errands, I came back, and played a bit more.  I think I have something I can use now.  Thanks everyone for all the help.  I ended up using standard mapping, not the spherical, along with some other tweaks.

Good ;) I post anyway some explanations for anyone interested. Using this time  sinus noises 3 times and rotating them.

(Greg I'll send you the Vue file)

WOW!
Wonderful result, Polax!

If you could put that on a web server somewhere, as a .jpg or in HTML. i'd be happy to add it to my Vue tutorial directory. I could host it for you on one of my web servers, for that matter.

Polax:

I think that is the look I am going for.  Could you send me those settings?

thanks,

greg

@ jc : unfortunately I have no web space :(
But you're welcome to host a copy of that ...  eventually you could put the exemple .vue scene somewhere too?
if so.. well IM where to send the file :)
