Subject: freeware that exports figure rigging?

Mugsey ( ) posted Wed, 04 April 2007 at 7:48 PM · edited Sat, 10 August 2024 at 7:25 AM

HEY GUYS!
Listen - got a problem,
I've got a couple of models on the backburner that I'm trying to rig for use in DAZ STUDIO - and POSER for those who have it. Anybody know of a freeware or cheaply priced app that exports rigging bones with the figure models?

Can I do it in BLENDER, WINGS 3d, MAKE HUMAN, ANIM8OR, or what?

Inquiring minds need to know....

Currently, no. Why not rig in Poser? Once rigged in Poser, the resulting CR2 can be used in Poser and Daz|Studio.

You could write a Blender script, perhaps, to create and save a .phi file when you export the figure geometry, then create a figure in Poser using the phi.  It's easier to export a Poser figure rig to Blender than to do the opposite, largely because Poser's rigging system is so unusual.  A blender export would have to split the body parts for the geometry and then figure out how to convert the vertex weights to Poser bend zones.  The thought of trying that makes my head hurt.  :-P

Cage can be an opinionated jerk who posts without thinking.  He apologizes for this.  He's honestly not trying to be a turkeyhead.

Cage had some freebies, compatible with Poser 11 and below.  His Python scripts were saved at archive.org, along with the rest of the Morphography site, where they were hosted.

DAZ|Studio (free) with the FBX plugin will be $100.  But have not heard great things about the FBX export...

Then you have a problem.

At this time, only Poser has all the tools necessary to do your own rigging and joint-editing.  See if you can find a cheap factory-sealed copy of P5 on Amazon.com or eBay.

Oh, I see.  He wants to setup a 'rigged Poser figure' without Poser and get a CR2 as a result.  Best of luck with that.  Even with Poser, you either need a PHI file (using PhiBuilder) or to do all of the rigging and JP settings in Poser.  There is no free application that will generate Poser CR2s from an obj mesh.  There is Greenbriar Studios ToolBox III Pro ($185) - get your wallet out!

P5?  Why not just find an old copy of Poser 4 for sale!  That is all you need.

P4 doesn't have a setup room, and without that you're limited to the PHI-building approach.  Also, copies of the Pro Pack expansion would be even harder to find.

And P5 has other advantages, such as enhanced runtime features.

actually Efronteers is clearancing a bunch of old poser packages at Ebay, here is Poser 4 with propack for $49 (and propack does have the setup room) but I agree I would go for at least P5. there are some mac versions of that at ebay.

That's what I meant - Poser 4 ProPack.  Sorry. ;)

You can't beat $49.  There is no advantage in figure setup between PP and 5 (none at all).  So, if you can save $50 with PP, why even care about P5?

Currently I do not have a credit card - but I guess I'll just put some cash back and buy P7 via money order for now.
