Subject: Posing via sensors !?

sirenia ( ) posted Sat, 26 May 2007 at 1:05 PM · edited Fri, 24 January 2025 at 7:47 PM

Oh boy, I was just daydreaming... Wouldn't it be totally awesome if we could attach some sensors on our own body's and let Poser register the move(ments) and apply the pose to the figure in your scene !! I think if someone could actually make such a thing work, he or she would sell a lot of this application 😄 Anyway... in the mean time... i will continue dreaming... Wim

It wouldn't be all that hard or expensive.  PVDF accelerometers are
down to about $30 each.  Pose one limb at a time, requiring maybe 4
accelerometers ... strap an accelerometer on each bone, put the results
into the computer via a multiplexer on the microphone jack.

A little Python processing, and bingo.

Thinking out loud:

For true commercial production of a full device, the hard part
would be getting FDA "medical device" approval, or getting it
past Underwriters Labs.

Either of these would be terribly expensive and thus prohibitive.

The more practical option, I suspect, would be to sell a kit....
Sell the multiplexer circuit and the programming, and tell the
customer where to buy the accelerometers!

Or use the wireless version of the accelerometers, which
are more expensive but might already be UL approved.

where do we get those? there's some local suppliers here, but they're approx. $200 each, exclusive of softwares, adc boards et al.

Several years ago I used some of them in a research project.
(This was before I was into Poser and all that... the accelerometers
were attached to jaws and larynx for speech measurements.)
I bought them from Elf Atochem, which still sells the same items.
At that time they were in the $100 range, but now they seem to
be around $35 or so.  This is presumably the wired, not the
wireless.....

If you google for

PVDF accelerometer prices

you'll see a good variety of brands.

I thought DataGloves already exist?
stuff like this: http://www.cyberarium.com/flyers/flextender/flextender.html
Like the others say, doing the sensors for the whole body shouldn't be all that hard.
Heck, my Playstation has a motion capture camera too, no special gear required. Of course, that is only 2D capture.
There are other motion capture devices...

LOL, like a wetsuit with sensors!

This thingie http://www.animazoo.com/products/gypsy5.htm supposedly works with Maya. No price listed, that I could find. I doubt it's few hundred bucks. Probably add-a-zero

That Flextender is interesting.  Hard to tell from the pic, but the bend
sensors look like PVDF strain sensors.  For the big bones of the legs
and arms, though, I think accelerometers would be best, because you
can get all 3 axes and dynamic info if needed.  The strain sensor would
only give you one bend axis, which is fine for a finger joint but not
so good for a hip.

Yow!  That Gypsy thing would be great for bondage if it didn't work
for motion sensing.   They seem to have less constraining and
less expensive products as well; their Gypsy MIDI might be pretty
close to correct for this purpose.

There are camera setups to do this. I belive only two cameras are required and some software. There was a Russian fellow working on this and you could buy his software and use any two cheap camers. Can't remember the link.

I was just hoping for like a poseable Barbie Doll, to import pose data...

I rememeber when this was a free program, I'm sure I still have the application, it's nice to know you're still there.  I'll have to give it a sincere effort!

*This thingie http://www.animazoo.com/products/gypsy5.htm supposedly works with Maya. No price listed, that I could find. I doubt it's few hundred bucks. Probably add-a-zero

*It outputs standard Bvh files and in the FAQ it lists Poser as compatible software, along with Maya, Max, XSI, and a few others.

However add another zero to the one you added as it costs $25,000.
