Subject: URGENT easy question for anyone with Poser 6

zippy ( ) posted Mon, 25 June 2007 at 6:35 PM · edited Sun, 24 November 2024 at 3:52 AM

Can someone please tell me if this is the correct address for the Poser 6 runtime folder?

C:/Program Files/Curious Labs/Poser 6/Runtime

I am trying to explain to someone very new to Poser who doesn't speak English and doesn't know where to manually install my  free Poser files.  I think they speak a language that is not compatible with normal Poser support or it's manual. We are chatting through translation software.

They have Poser 6 but I only have Poser 4, 5, 7. So I don't know if version 6 still uses the 'curious labs' main folder or is different like Poser version 7.

Many sincere thanks

Andy / zippy

The main Runtime for P6 is in the same place as for P4, P5, and P7 (only some of the preference files moved for P7).

I install to a custom directory... But on the offchance that something slipped by me I checked my C:/Program Files/Curious Labs/Poser 6 folder and indeed Miki's headroom data was set up there (I wondered where that had got to).

Thank you, but I beg to differ. Poser 7 is different from Poser 5 on my computer.

Poser 5 installed to C:/program files/curious labs.......but Poser 7 installed to C:/program files/e frontier - therefore the two runtimes are in different locations. You got me worried now!

As for custom directories, yes, I have tried to do that but have found that occasionally Poser 7 loses touch with them. Could possibly be a registry error issue.

I'll go with kalon if she says her P6 runtime is in the curious labs folder.

In case I wasn't clear, I didn't set that up, the Miki faceroom installer did, so I'm assuming that's the default.

Zippy you are correct about both P6 and P7 locations whether its curious labs for P6 and lower and efrontier for P7.

If they are using a non-English version of Windows, the "program files" part of the path may be different. My Swedish Windows version installs all programs to: C:Programetc etc

Groan!!!!!!!!

I had no idea Marianne there were different versions of Windows. I'll just have to hope that this person who wrote to me can find the right folder.

Use the Windows search program to find "poser.exe". Or if they have a desktop shortcut to Poser, right-click and check the Properties. If it's only in the Start Menu, things are a bit harder, but just making a new shortcut on the Desktop gets around the hassles.

You should always use relative pathing from the Runtime folder. That way, anyone can install the files into their Poser folder, no matter where it's located. Some people install Poser to the default c:Program Files, some people install it to their "e" drive, and some people install it to a separate folder just for graphics programs.

For example, you should zip your files like this:
figure.cr2 in RuntimeLibrariescharacterNew Figures

And, for example, the referencing within the cr2 file should say:
textureMap ":Runtime:Textures:MyFolder:MyModel:Texture1.jpg"

ZIppy:  Yes thats correct, and you can also install to the download folder, which shows up in your library on 6 (if you want to keep things you d/l seperate from the original p6 content).

For the french version of P6, it's in program filese frontierPoser 6. So i guess it can be different within the country. The french version get out after the english one, maybe they changed the path there.

You are all being very nice and helpful. I know my zips should have been created to automatically install but I still don't understand the process of setting up zips. I'll wait until I'm not feeling so tired and will read the winzip instructons.

Is there a Poser zip tutorial anywhere?

I don't know of a tutorial. But the easiest way I know is to set up a "dummy" poser file system (with just the folders you need. For instance, if you have a character file with obj and textures & mat files...

Runtime
    Geometries
        Your character's obj folder here
    Libraries
        Character
            Name of your Character folder
        Pose
Name of the folder containing your mat files
        Textures
Name of the folder referenced by your mat files and containing your texture maps

Put your files in the appropriate folders within this dummy file.

Context sensitive Menu
If you have installed Winzip to load in Windows explorer as a right click option, right click on the runtime folder (do not select save path), chose the option to save as runtime.zip. The newly created runtime.zip is generally located one folder up in the file hierarchy. It will contain everything that was in the Runtime folder, including folder names. Rename to whatever you call your product.

If you have not installed winzip to be context sensitive in Windows explorer, then open up a Windows explorer window, and open up a blank Winzip menu. Drag the runtime folder to the Winzip window. It will give you the option to name the file. Click "add" and Winzip will zip everything within the Runtime folder, including folder names. Again, do not select save full path.

Thank you very much Kalon. That's as good as any tutorial could be:) I've copied it down and will give it a go sometime soon when I'm in a more technical mood.
