Subject: Lens question...

TheAlex ( ) posted Thu, 28 June 2007 at 5:53 PM · edited Mon, 23 December 2024 at 11:29 AM

I'm still using a Canon Powershot G3, and wondered what your opinions would be if I bought a lens like this? It doesn't have any brand-name listed, but I wondered if it would do its job well enough to be worthwhile or if there's a higher chance it'll be pretty awful...

I'm tempted to upgrade to a Canon EOS 400D this weekend (there's a £50 cashback offer that runs out on Saturday) but I'm not sure whether to go DSLR or upgrade to a new prosumer, so I'll probably just stick with my G3 for a while longer. :-)

P.S. I know there will probably be import taxes importing the above to the UK, but it should still be cheaper than buying something similar over here...

It all depends what you want. These 'add on' lenses for prosumer cams are not known for their high quality in general, but it is cheaper than getting a DSLR and lenses for that. But you will have higher quality and more versatility.

i agree with twopynts ! it's cheaper but you will loose the quality of the lens !

And the G2 & G3 have got wonderful lens !!! i still have my g2 !

think about the evolution you wish for you in photography, and don't forget one thing : there is always a 'nice offer' ;o)

Oh these are crap!!! Don't waste your cash here! Honestly!

Humm...refreshing news and especially to hear from Tibet...yes, agreed, these lenses are generally worth less in practical usage than the price..but some do better than others and you might be happy with it.   Anyway to put it on and try before purchase?   Perhaps not..if lucky enough to be around a large photo store with such in stock..try it on first.    my 1 cent.     TomDart.

Save your money for a DSLR there will always be an offer on at some point in time, and the longer you wait the cheaper prices get... Dont be fooled by the results from the eye on first look they can seem to be fine but adding extra glass on the end will create a whole new set of problems like flare and or distortions if you must go for any add on of this type at least go with the original makers, there is a better chance these type of problems will be reduced to a minimum

I agree with Danny about adding extra glass to a lens, go for the DSLR but be sure its the way you want to go (it works for me).

Once you start on the SLR or DSLR path there are a number of practical things to consider besides (in my opinion) the increased flexability and quality.  Things such as filters for the lenses you purchase (a UV filter at least as added protection), sensor cleaning (a good quality hand blower), bag for the kit and insurance because lets face it you are investing a lot of money.

I'm sure all this has already occured to you and don't let it put you off the DSLR route I have never regretted buying my 350D.

I bought something similar for my old Sony DSC-S85, it was the worst $129 I ever spent (yes, $129...I was a total idiot and also had more than a few beers in me).  Save for the dSLR; that way you can go into the poorhouse by spending tons of money on good glass :)

Besides, you don't really expect something decent when the postage costs more than the lens, do you?

Don't buy the add ones, I did and they are terrible, I was just sooooooooooo lucky that the photoshop took them back.

Go for the 400D and maybe get a different lens to the kits lens, that you will see in time, is not that great.
