Subject: Picture of the Day by E-On

Hi everybody,

what do you think about the pictures, E-on published for the pic of the day.
I think, the quality is very high,  but the there are only a few artists, who are prefered.
May be a new forum like "newcommer of the day"  many artists may enjoy to post
their own work.
(sorry, for my english)

I don't ever look. Don't have enough time to scope out all the various sites with Vue pics.

I don't really agree. Of course picture of the day should be a picture that shows great skills at work, and convey emotions and/or photorealism, it is supposed to show everyone checking the e-on site what are the possibilities offered by their products. They are not goin to show a simple terrain with a ready made material, & a ready made ecosystem, with a simple cloud in front of the camera.
You can check the Vue community site here:
www.cornucopia3d.com
There you have many galleries where you can post your work, including a beginners gallery.
And you can post you work here too. Posting your work is one of the best way to get others attention, get their opinion, and learn some tips & tricks along the way.

From my experience;

e-On should consider all the levels of users and all of their software packages.  I have written to them about this factor, that they should create several galleries for different levels of users.  They declined my request.

They are in the business of selling software and that usually means supporting those who buy the top Brands.  Ocassionally, they do choose an image that does not have a direct realtionship to skill but does convery another message of particular interest related to the software.

Renderosity is a good example of a site where it does not matter what your skill level, or artistic abilities, you can post.

A few months ago there was a thread raising pretty much the same comment.  The original poster in that thread has since gone on to have his work featured on the picture of the day.

Some users do appear to be more prolific and to have mastered the art of creating high quality pictures with Vue. E-on uses its web site to promote sales of Vue.  Like most software companies it chooses to highlight the best work done with its software on the site it sells its product from.  If a potential customer went there and saw the piece Bruno describes on the front page of the site will they buy Vue?

As Bruno mentioned e-on do provide a site where users can post their pictures  - Cornucopia 3D.  C3D includes galleries and forums for users of all levels of experience, abiltiy and interest.

Sorry, but may be someone will translate:

Ich habe verstanden, dass es bei E-On um das Verkaufen von Software geht. Ich habe auch verstanden, dass die Plattform für Bilder usw. C3d ist.
Trotzdem: Eine gewisse Arroganz gegenüber dem normalen User (und auch Bezahler) ist nicht zu übersehen. Vue6 Easel kostet auch Geld...Und die Ergebnisse sind so schlecht nicht.
Aber vielleicht bin ich zu naiv,   es geht um das verkaufen.

I used google to translate your post, so I hope I got it right. Of course Easel is sold by e-on, costs money, ad creates great renders too, and if you have a look at the software used for the Picture of the day, it's not always Infinit or xStream. Easel can produce great renders, and e-on needs to show this too. And they do.
I hope you didn't feel we were saying that there is no room in the Vue community for "not so great renders" or beginners. There is room for everyone, and everyone does a "not so great render" every once in a while, even the best Vue artists. OK, now they will hate me!

I still go back to my experience with software companies. Often they do not have the same criteria for choosing a work of art that we expect they should. I have been a 2D Judge of art in past competitions, not for e-On.

What the criteria appears to be, beyond selling software, is who’s artwork is presenting the software in a manner different, unusual, comical, etc. that has not been displayed in previous submissions. They really do not want to put the best of the best forward each and every Day, or there would be a lot of people who would not buy the software.

Let me give you an idea of what it is like to be a Judge. A company makes a call for art work. All of the submissions are collected, and then a committee selects the art work that best represents what the company wants to say or sell. They often make a well rounded choice of types of art, or maybe not, because they may have a more specific goal in mind. Not to get off the track, you can see the motives of the company may not have anything to do with Professional Skill or quality at all, there may be other more important reasons, the company may or must address. Their choice may even be seasonal, tied to sales, or subjects, such as The Pirate of the Caribbean, etc. So, my day comes and I am given guidelines by which the company would like me to choose the winning works of art.  I might have to make a choice on criteria, rather than personal preference based on professional merit.

I hope you can see how, really complex this issue is for these companies, and all of us as artists. What they pick sometimes just does not make sense to us, but it does to them, for whatever reason.

Note: I am not taking sides with e-On, but do feel it does require some explanation, for those who submit their work and do not get chosen. Just keep trying and show them how serious you are.  You might also keep this thought in mind the next time you want to submit a work of art; “Use the software, or do something that has not been done before in a way that will get their attention!”

I think Keenart gave the best of explanations here. I've have a few PODs myself, 4 or 5 (gosh, I'm not even sure!), but submitted a lot more! You got to keep trying, and each time, your skills will grow, and one day, no doubt we'll see you there.
On the other hand, athough it is very satisfying and is a recognition of your skills to see your work on the front page of e-on's site, it shouldn't be your goal. Making beautiful art with the tool provided (Vue for this matter) and sharing it with other users or maybe  making  a living out of it is more important.

I need to agree with Bruno here, most of the stuff I do is not great by any means and certainly not picture of the day quality, but I enjoy doing it in my spare time and upload what I do. Some people like what I do and post nice comments, others probably don't but either way I just like sharing my experience with Vue and showing some of the work I have done.

I really like the Picture Of The Day images, people their have gone far beyond simple scenes in most cases, and so they should be displayed on the front of the e-on site, good for them I say :) In fact I have even mailed a couple to ask how they got a certain effect.

The are multiple gallery sites out their, for Vue, Cornucopia is probably best I would say.
