Subject: ..a lightbulb goes off in your head

pakled ( ) posted Wed, 01 August 2007 at 6:47 AM · edited Tue, 30 July 2024 at 2:08 AM

this has probably been touched on before (think there was a thread about the 'go'auld glow'..;) I had the thought; suppose you could render the eyes and mouth transparent, then stuck a light inside the head - would that cause a glow to come out of the head? or, more succinctly..

Premise- "and then a light bulb went off in me head"
Idea- have light coming out of the eye sockets and mouth
Proposed method- make eye parts and mouth parts transparent, then cram a spotlight in the head space
Intended Result- sort of a cross between the 'go'auld glow of Stargate, and maybe the 5th element.
Actual Result- light shows up in 'normal' render, but not Production...go figure.
the stygian darkness of the inner skull doesn't shine out of the eyes or mouth. Interesting effect, though. Sigh..;) Sort of like glass marbles for eyes (actually not too far from the telepath look in Babylon 5..;) useful, but not what I had in mind.

I'm still a newbie when it comes to Poser lighting. In Bryce, I'd just pop a radial light in there and be done with it, but as far as I know, Poser can only position spotlights. Unless there's a point light, or radial light, etc. Any ideas?

Hmm..How about a point light instead and some volumetric lighting. That could work....In theory.

a point light in each eyesocket (after making the eyeball 100% transparent) then another in the mouth, adjust the "dist end" dial on each light, so the light doesn't travel to far.

I kind of agree with Peelo about some volumetric atmosphere to make it glow more obviously - light all by itself is invisible, it needs something to reflect/refract on.

Ensure all eye materials also have 'cast shadows' turned off. Just to be sure.

That would be my suggestion also..

Pakled:

Is this something like what you want to achieve?

yeah...that's it, that's the ticket..;) I made the corneas, irii (is that a word?..;), and eyeball whites all transparent. If I get time tonight, I'll have to try this...thanks.

Pakled:

Unless you want eyes that look like headlights, putting the lights inside the eyes will not likely produce an effect like on the Stargate program.

Using Poser 7, I made this render by setting the Ambient_Value of eyewhite and iris to 4.000 for both eyes, and making the Ambient_Color very very dark yellow. I also made the Diffuse_Color of the Irii a light blue so that they would show up when I lighted them from outside. Finally, I changed the Diffuse_Color of the pupils to medium red. This work is done in the Material Room.

To light the eyes, I made two point-lights with Dist Start - 0.001, Dist End - 0.025, Intensity - 85%, and Scale 25%. These lights were placed in front of the eyes and a little toward the outside corner of the eye. Move them around until they give you the effect you want. Adjust the color etc. to get the right look. Create these lights then change them to Point-lights on the Properties tab, and change the Parameters listed above on the Parameters tab. These lights can be parented to the head, though that altered the scale, and I had to rescale them again.

Oooops! The above message makes it look like I used negative values for Dist Start, Dist End, and Intensity. I used only positive values for all settings and parameters. Sorry.
