So is this an update for us or are they going to charge us for this. Anyone else know about this or have I missed something.

Will find out Tuesday!  I'll be hanging around the Vue booth like a bat!

Speculation - since it said atmospheric effects - I wonder if they are adding in a particle maker.

I fear it's not free. :glare:

Surely they won't charge when what we have now still has bugs

iloco ( ) posted Fri, 03 August 2007 at 6:41 PM

It should be free to all of us for beta testing for a year.   Working on something new to charge for when still bugs in Vue 6 inf is not very nice.
No Vue 7 to get money so just charge for Vue 6.5 that we have helped get the bugs out of and adding a little extra to charge.    Quite a tricky move. :(

Cheers ( ) posted Fri, 03 August 2007 at 6:53 PM

Of course it won't be free....5 releases never are now.
I would be prepared to pay for it if the price is fair and takes in consideration all the trouble Vue has caused to its customers over the last year.
Now particles would be interesting as Vue has trouble coping with the features it has already lol!

Cheers

Although I would love to see a poarticle system or fluid effects like better waves IMO what is needed most is an improved method of creating realistic rock & terrains. Like cliffs and canyons that look real and ledges with overhangs etc. I would also like to be able to carve the side of a canyon too. Well I could go on but whatever they add will be better than not adding anything at all though. :)

estherau ( ) posted Fri, 03 August 2007 at 10:15 PM

i would like NPR in vue (non photorealistic rendering ie cel shading) - and yes i already know about the slow way and skinvue cel shading that we can already do love esther

i wish they would improve the rendering speeds, especially regarding object AA. Love the way my stuff looks when i crank the Object AA quality to 100% but man does it kill my render times.

Uh most .5 releases ARE free.
So this one should be.

Particles are a must if Vue is to be a "Professional" product.
Major improvements in ability to handle Poser and general stability etc are needed too.

Thanks for linking to my post Akhiris :-)

A bit of background: That story started circulating on the tech news sites yesterday and I copied it verbatim after I'd seen it on a dozen sites.  I suspect it was posted by e-on to a distribution service but I can't find it on the ones I've looked on, I can't find it on their site either and  I don't have any inside information from e-on either.  However I can't remember e-on ever charging for a none whole number release so I wouldn't expect them to start now.

Thanks for the posting,  My CC cringes at the word Siggraph so maybe this year it won't be so bad.

impish ( ) posted Sat, 04 August 2007 at 3:07 PM

According to my records I've paid e-on for Vue 4, Vue 4 Mover, Vue 4 Pro and so on.  I can't remember if the first releast number fo Vue 4 Pro was 4.0 or 4.5.  So let me correct my statement - as far as I remeber e-on has only ever required one payment for any given whole number version of a particular flavour of Vue, sidegrades between versions may have incured a charge.

iloco ( ) posted Sat, 04 August 2007 at 3:44 PM

It don't really matter about pricing.   to late to back up.
Vue 4.5 Pro was a bugger I will never forget.  Was full of bugs and memory leaks untill the end with last update it finaly was a very good program. :)
It was very reliable after that big memroy leak with GDI was found and fixed. :)
With all of the problems with Vue 6 Inf and most of us haivng to build a new computer so can use it I am really glad we will be getting something for our beta testing. :)
Even though I am not in the beta group I feel I did find a lot of bugs and reported and tech confirmed and fixed.  What gets me is they were bugs that should have been caught before Vue was released. :)

Dale B ( ) posted Sat, 04 August 2007 at 4:49 PM

Here's hoping the info is good, Mark....! It would explain the comparative rarity of upgrades in this version; maybe this will fix some other issues people are having. If accurate, we'll have wind. And point source illuminatable spectral clouds in more layers than current. All that leaves is gravity and rain/snow/dust particles, and we'd have the weather system we've been begging for all these years....

silverblade33 ( ) posted Sat, 04 August 2007 at 4:55 PM

Is it just me, or does it seem to suggest they may add LIGHTNING as a...primitive, an effect or something??

Now that, would be a damned good thing if they could do it.

Silverblade in me cartoons, flinging Vue lighting bolts, MUHAHA!! ;)

Just arrived in San Diego, finishing registration and merchandise pick up... I will bring back some news from the e-on booth when I meet when on Tuesday. Maybe I will run into Peggy or some other members from the forum :) I will have my Renderosity tshirt to be safe

Dale B ( ) posted Sat, 04 August 2007 at 6:57 PM

It -may- be a hardcoded effect, so that you have a choice between point lights creating the illumination of lightning bolts, and a more general 'sheet lightning' kind of effect that is easier on the rendertime. Personally, If this pans out, I know the first thing I'm gonna do; add running lights to Davo's LCV combo, engine glow, and have the bugger landing on one the Dystopia landing field in spectral cloud fog.....with an approaching thunderstorm, of course.

dlk30341 ( ) posted Sat, 04 August 2007 at 7:12 PM

LOL - Dale - You better post that render, if indeed it pans out as you think :)  I would love to see it.

dlk30341 ( ) posted Sun, 05 August 2007 at 2:35 PM

Aug. 2006 is the date the article was written.  If you read further down it says it will be released at some point in 2007 as a plugin for various apps.  It appears they initially showed this along with V6 at Siggraph last year when the 6 line was introduced.

iloco ( ) posted Sun, 05 August 2007 at 3:22 PM

I find it most curious that it took over a year for its release.   Guess it had to go through a lot of testing before its release.....:)

Dale B ( ) posted Sun, 05 August 2007 at 4:12 PM

Actually, I would suspect more that they had liscencing for tech that took some time to integrate. They might even have had to wait until a specific date -before- using a piece of tech. Remember they have a bit of a relationship with ILM atm..... Consider: If the info in Mark's blog is accurate, they have a new specular engine, and since we are talking the ability to do multiple specular layers that can react to sourcelighting, both of which were not coded into V6 release because of memory and speed issues, they must have improved or flat out replaced the memory manager for a more efficient one. Oh well, day after tomorrow and we see.....

ShawnDriscoll ( ) posted Mon, 06 August 2007 at 1:06 AM

Wasn't day after tomorrow a disaster?  :)

I prefered the anthologies of Robert A Heinlein's future history stories with the same title as the film but I'm odd that way.  I was really excited when I saw the films title and equally disapointed when I found out what it was about.
