Subject: Moving Poser to another (new) computer

Max_Raptor ( ) posted Tue, 11 September 2007 at 12:50 PM · edited Sun, 28 July 2024 at 3:22 AM

Hi all
A bit of the general topic, but I like to hear if anoyone knows the easiest way
to move my Poser6 install from one computer to the other, without having to
reinstall all the million different things I have in it ?

My thought is to move the poser install folder to the new computer, then run
poser setup pointing to it, will this work or ?

Cheers

2 ways.

(assuming you have the machines networked)

1:  Install Poser on new machine. Copy Runtime from Old Machine to new machine
or
2: Install Poser on new machine. On old machine, Share the Runtime Folder. On new machine Map this to a drive letter (such as X). In poser on new machine connect Runtime on old machine as a Runtime. (warning : this method can lead to long load times as content loads over your network)

Well this is how I did it but I only have the one runtime arranged in sub folder format!

Copied runtime to my XHD
Installed Poser to new machine
Deleted runtime from new install
Put runtime from XHD into the new install

All working fine, no issues!

This was from an XP home machine to a Vista Ultimate 64 machine!

Excelent thanks for the input, yes it just dawned on me moving the runtime
is the way to go, cept the uninstall features would be lost for the install products
but that is no big deal !

Thanks

When i did it the first time (after a big crash issue) i followed thefixer advices and did like he said above: all works like a charm!

As i will have to do it again tomorrow when i will receive my new computer, i will again do the same (my "Runtime", "Downloads" runtime and "Apollo Max2007" runtime are already saved on the disk!!).

I could just not imagine the time lost to re-install all from the zips!!! :scared:

Thanks again thefixer!!! :woot:

Well yes I guess it was in the end, but it was bloody hard going!

The good thing was I could leave a lot of stuff out that I downloaded early on that I didn't really need, you know when you're a noob and you grab everything! [LOL]
Some of that didn't make it back!!!!

I've had to reinstall poser on this machine.... i think about 7 different times, due to hard drive isues (ok, viruses that wouldnt go away no matter what i tried - one WAS a hard drive complete crash, though)

the last time, i moved all my stuff to my second drive, reformatted first drive, moved stuff back after reinstalling poser...

and discovered something ODD.

aparently, when i had installed the previous time, and did pretty much the same technique... i had accidently deleted some stuff out of the geometries & textures.

not that it had bothered me, i didnt even know stuff was missing!

but, lesson learned - be careful LOL.

am looking to get a new computer here soon.... and this poor dinosaur will be retired until i have my cabin built & can set it up next to the new one for my "crash box".. eventually i'll get to the point my new computer will not be attached to the internet at all.  thats what my crash box will be for - to get the viruses LOL.

unfortunately, living where i am now (a 7 and a half foot wide by 25 foot long trailer).. there's NO ROOM to put up yet another computer.  sighs

have fun with the new machine!!!!!!!!!!

Rarer than a hairy egg and madder than a box of frogs....

Just to say that install/uninstall options are sometimes a pain in the neck. You're stuck with the original folder layout, which tends to be very flat and unwieldy--every different clothing set with its own little folder in the Figures library. So I reorganise, and junk the uninstall applet. But some useful things DO NOT GET PUT IN THE RUNTIME FOLDER. Such as the DAZ ReadMe's folder, with it's subfoldered filelists. Check before you delete the old Poser folder. Doing a Poser install to the new folder will sort out the links to open a file when you click on it. You can also do it through the Folder Options menu in Windows, but that is a bit geeky. Poser itself is actually a pretty small part of the total, so I have Poser 5 and Poser 6 both installed, and sharing a Runtime. This can sometimes be awkward when Poser can't find a file, and some things need to be duplicated. DAZ INJ morph folders, if I remember right.

Yes, it is tempting to do a new install anyways to clean out the junk and maybe a better
folder structure, the flat file (almos) is very demanding since poser lack a better way
of choosing things, you would think that they could incorporate a tool for rearrangeing stuff
I have been very careful with that especially the Poses folder, since I screwed it up ones
and the obj files could not be found etc etc, guess that has todo with the rsr files or somthing.

Anways, building the box this weekend , AMD Athlon 64 2x , 4 Gb Ram and geforce 8800 GTX
hoping this will speed things up a bit ;)

Cheers
