Subject: Vargas effect shader?

SmallFry ( ) posted Thu, 11 October 2007 at 1:52 PM · edited Sat, 11 January 2025 at 12:01 AM

Greetings!

Over in the RuntimeDNA forums, someone's succeeded in creating a Poser MAT which creates this unique effect: http://www.runtimedna.com/mod/forum/messages.php?ShowMessage=250426

It looks like it could be pretty useful for other types of renders as well. A shader like this could be used for renders done in a Brom or rkpos style. tI've even seen a version of this MAT offered for Vue.
Does anyone know if something like this can be done using Carrara's shaders?

Thanks!

Hi SmallFry, Yep, it's easy to do in Carrara. The easiest way is to use the ShaderOps Fake Fresnel plug-in from Digital Carvers Guild (www.digitalcarversguild.com) There are some other ways to do it but it takes a little more work in the Shader Room. BTW, the Vargas work is usually pretty unsaturated except for lips and eyes. So, to emulate that effect in Carrara, the light sources need to be low and the ambient lighting around 50% or so. Every scene will need to be lit a little differently but that's a start. For the two skins I simply multiplied in a red to one and added in white to the other. Mark

Thanks, Mark!

I'll give it a shot. That looks really good. The Poser MAT file ends up being so complicated that I was afraid to even try anything. I'll post some samples later. Thanks again!
