A quick look at the links macatelier posted shows about 64 messages in total; minus the originating post and jenstar's very occasional reply, and you have about 45 messages posted by others. That's quite a lot of time. Oh, and I count one (1) 'thanks' in amongst the replies by the OP.
I once read a spy thriller in which the CIA designed a fiendishly complex electronic device, the intention being that the Soviets would steal it then waste months of their best scientists' time trying to figure out what it did (which was nothing). Just came to mind thinking about all these messages :-)

It was a book called 'Running Blind' by the British author Desmond Bagley. Written in 1970, but still appears to be available on Amazon - though I'm not sure it's so good that I'd pay the price being asked.

Small piece of trivia: 'Running Blind' is the US title of the more recent book by Lee Child, which is titled 'The Visitor' in the UK. Don't get them mixed up!
