Subject: Animation file format for web playback?

Conniekat8 ( ) posted Sat, 08 December 2007 at 3:30 PM · edited Sun, 17 November 2024 at 1:10 AM

I used to be on top of this couple of years ago, and now I'm having brainfarts...
Poser saves as an avi... I want to convert it to mpg.
I think I used to do it with Adobe Premiere or Vegas Video, but I don't want to reinstall them just for that. Are there any small and inexpensive nifty utilities that will do the same?

I;m doing mpg because it used to be better for online playback. Any better ideas? (mp4?)
It's  quick 400 frame animation showing morphs on a piece I'm making. Avi file right now is 22 megs. If I remember right theese things can be made much smaller.

use flash or gifanimation for animation. flash is preferred by most sites. in OS X, QT will convert it to some lower-bit-rate codecs (h264, divx et al.). that is the biggest problem in regard to video IMVHO. everybody wants to use their own codec, meaning they think users will download the codec (and even the player) just to view their vid.

try www.videohelp.com , they have a list of utilities , some of them freeware . I think what you want is transcoding .

Flash would be a good option , but there isnt any free software that I can find .
wmv format is pretty small

Youtube has effectively turned FLV into the standard.  But as Markschum said,
there aren't any free converters ... except for Youtube itself.

If you upload in most standard codecs, Youtube will automatically turn the clip
into FLV when it's in place.  You could then download and remove the clip
from Youtube if you only want it to appear on your own website, but even
then it would be easier to just link to the clip on Youtube!

There is a free app that will convert AVI to MPG, I used it once to convert an uncompressed Poser AVI to MPG, it did a good job, high quality with small file size. Little_Dragon put me on to it, unfortunatly it's not installed on my current system, and I can't remember it's name. Perhaps you could IM Little_Dragon.

I have never tried saving Flash from Poser, because I have heard some bad reports, quallity apparently is very bad. Converting from AVI to Flash in third party app may be better. Personally (I'm no expert) I would stick with MPG.

Try Free FLV convertor. "This software can also convert all your videos (divx, xvid, mpeg, dvd, avi) to FLV video (Flash video) with an automatic HTML page creation." - though I haven't used it for that yet. Be sure to opt out of the Dealio Toolbar when installing.

Another option for the conversions is Super-C.  It's free and reasonably comprehensive on the conversion options (inc FLV).  I haven't used the FLV output container much, but it does work.

On the player, I use FLV Player 1.3.3.  It's also free, and I just checked and found it for download at
