Is it possible to open files other than those with a .mt5 extention in Poser, say lightwave (.pst), 3DS Max (.mat) etc. ? If not, is it possible to convert those materials to mt5.?

No.

No conversion either.
The only way is to setup equivalent materials in Poser by hand.
