THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Saving a Bryce file?

vernonglen ( ) posted Sat, 22 December 2007 at 9:12 PM · edited Thu, 25 July 2024 at 5:59 PM

I have been away from Bryce for some time.

I upgraded to Bryce 6.0 and am on an Intel based Mac Pro with a ton of ram. I cannot seem to save my Bryce files. I build a nice scene, saving as I go, (By command S) or I actually  pull down and choose the "Save" command. The next time I try to open the saved files, they are empty. Just the default file. Clearly I am missing something obvious.

Any help is much appreciated.

Thank you,

vernonglen

Maybe they have been saved in a different location?  I have done this myself, so I know how easy it is.

I almost always use "save as" - since that way I can number the files with a different number sequentially yet the same name - so that if something goes wrong I can always go back a stage.

I think the only time I use ctrlS is if bryce is already crashing - so then it's a desperate attempt to save before it all dies...

I have noticed however that some of the images for such saved files are entirely blank...
I guess the best rule is to "save as" - repeatedly, and once you've save a file as (for instance) books1.br6 bryce will then save the next "save as" file as books2.br6 - for you.  Easy.

Did you manually add the .BR6 extension when saving? If you double click or drag 'n drop a Mac Bryce file without the extension it just loads the default scene. The only way to open a Mac Bryce scene without the extension is with the "Open" menu item. And the incremental save feature doesn't work on the Mac anymore 'cuase it ups the extension (i.e. br7, br8, etc.) instead of the file name.

I was having a similar problem, and got this response from Horo over in the DAZ Bryce forum:

"The problem usually appears after you made a lot of changes to your scene and the undo-buffer gets filled up. There is no other way to clear this buffer than saving your work often, quit Bryce, restart it and load your project. If it gets elaborate, do this often. It's tedious, but it is a workaround.

If you get an out of memory because you loaded a huge HDRI, you can continue working on your scene but you cannot save it anymore. But you can render and save the resulting picture. In such a case, use a smaller HDRI until you are happy with everything, save, load the huge HDRI, render and save the picture. You still have the source file with the smaller HDRI if you need to make some changes."   I am using a PC, not sure if things work the same on your Mac.

BjornLo said this:

"Opinions vary on Bryce 6. I like it in theory. But, for anything but simple simple scenes I can not trust it. It should be impossible to build a scene which you can not save. That this bug has been there for close to a year is just shameful (in my opinion)...No "new" version should break features which worked in previous ones. And, if they do they should make it priority 1 to fix it."

LoL.... this is Daz3D we're talking about after all.  But then, software by definition is 'un-set', or ever complete, or finished.. or....................

I bet on what dhama said.  Bryce will save to the last folder that had been used as a save.  It may not necessarily be the same folder you default to when using "open"

I've done it several times.  My daughter will goof around in Bryce and save something to her account.  I will later work on a scene and do a save.  When I go back to open it later, it is not in my account or pre-set folder but in hers.

Once you find the file and move it or re-save it to a location you pick, Bryce will start saving to that location all the time.  Does this make sense?

Thank you all.

Adding the .BR6 to the end of the file name and opening from within Bryce is working. It seems clumsy to me, but, hey, it works.

Thanks again to the great Renderosity Bryce community for the quick help.

Oh, are you trying to open the files by just double clicking on them, i.e. not through first opening bryce?  If so I have never been able to open Bryce scene files unless through Bryce itself - double clicking on the file just brings up an error message as Bryce attempts to open.
