Subject: OT - Could some recommend a webcam?

SnowSultan ( ) posted Thu, 10 January 2008 at 4:01 PM · edited Fri, 24 January 2025 at 11:49 PM

Hi, hope it's not a problem asking this here. I need to get a new webcam and was wondering if anyone here could recommend any in particular. The only requirement is that it is free-standing, (preferably on a raised stand) because I am using a large LCD TV as a monitor which is too high for a 'clamp-on' webcam to sit atop. Fluid video is more important that size or quality, and I use MSN Messenger, if that makes any difference. Price isn't really an issue.

Sorry I haven't posted anything recently either, I've really been out of it when it comes to art lately. Anyone else sit in front of their computers wanting to make something but just can't bring yourself to start? I don't know why that keeps happening to me...

Anyway, thanks in advance.  :)

Hehe, no Sam, I use it sometimes when I talk to Japanese friends. Amazingly, I have no interest in pr0n (strange but true!).   ;)

Thanks Klutz. I've looked at the Logitech Quickcam Orbit, but I just wondered what other people thought. More opinions are welcome of course.

The Philips webcams are reckoned to be of good quality, although I can't offer a recommendation based on personal use. They're often used by amateur astronomers for making "stacked" pseudo-long exposures. That's probably a long way off your proposed application, but it's a good indication of low noise and reliability.

I use Phillips, too...but the one I have is clipped on.  I clip it onto my desk, though, rather than my monitor, because, like yours, it's a thicker LCD.  (I have one of those "bookshelf desks")
