Need an answer on why do V4 eyes look so strange to me,compare to V3,what do I need to do to make her look more normal to me?

without a pic, we can;t tell what you are talking about.

I am sure that V4 looks both natural and pleasing to many CG artists, and I don't want to start another V4 verses whatever figure war, but I know what EXXE means about V4's strange eyes. To many of us V4's eyes look wrong at best, and frequently disturbing. There are a lot of renders out there using a lot of textures, but the eyes in almost every one of them look glaring. The eyes are so distracting to me, that I have not bought V4.

I know that there have been some threads about this subject in the past, with reasons to explain the look of her eyes, but I couldn't find the right combination of keywords to search them out.

Netherworks had a recent tutorial on how to use the Blackeyes product with V4, but I haven't seen enough renders using that solution to convince me that the V4 product would be usable to me.

I would be interested in knowing if others (who do not like V4's eyes in default settings) have found ways to make the eyes look more natural. If I knew how to make V4 look better to me, I would consider buying her.

I am also having a problem with V4's eyes. Whenever I use "point at" the eyes appear to be cross-eyed.

Gareee ( ) posted Mon, 14 January 2008 at 9:09 PM

I just browsed through daz's V4 catalog, and see a whole lot of different appearances for V4's eyes. Kinda hard to tell what someone doesn;t like without an image, but I was every eye expressions from bashful to brazen.

I do kno wdaz finally released a figure with properly anatomical eyes... if you look through the pro cgi forums, you'll see lots of discussion about th eproper way to build and render cgi eyes, and V4 was the first I saw that looked "right" to me.

Granted, a bad artists can make anything look bad, and a good artist can usually make anything look good OR bad.. LOL!

Here are some examples I grabbed, and they all look fine to me.

They are too large, that is the problem. In the default (non-dialed/morphed) state, V4's eyes are disproportionately large in comparison to the rest of her body. This is an anatomical mistake, ie, the modeller who created her probably needed to reference some more photos or something of people and get a better notion of the correct anatomical proportions for a female human. Her hands and feet are also too large for her body as well.

I know anatomy. It's one subject I know by heart. I'm a nurse offline. LOL :)

For what it's worth, LMK, I do believe the eyes can be morphed to be smaller in the head than they are. I would have to double check that, though. I have V4.1 but have only rarely used her due to the sheer amount of lag and resources just having her in the scene causes. It's not worth it to me to fight with lag and blocky camera movements and crashing renders just to have the 'latest greatest newest figure' in my renders. LOL

Anyway - that, I believe, is what hte problem is with the figure. Her eyes, hands, and feet are too large. Hands and feet are easily morphed smaller, but I would have to double check to see if V4's eyes can be made smaller.

V4's eyes are disproportionately large, which is most likely more than half the problem.  Scale them down to 80-90% and et viola! (Said the starving musician).

I'm pretty sure that there are dials for eyes size, as well as spacing as well. I think that "cher" looking image I posted might show them looking too large, at least to me.

Seliah: Thanks, In non-Poser life, I am a nurse also.

Gareee: I did not want to single out a specific artist or merchant and I do not have the model to do a render for myself. I haven't looked at many of the V4 textures for a while, and they are looking better as you show. I particulary like the last three images. I had noticed that the eyes on the fourth picture look very lifelike. I believe she is the "Star" texture at DAZ.

The eyes are very tricky to get right. Thanks for the pointers everyone. I may add V4 back to the shoping list.

Here is another thread about her eyes. Maybe you can glimmer some more information from it:

I just grabbed images from a number of artists.. I didn;t even look to see who did them, I was just looking for V4 images where the eyes looks good to me.

The bottom three images do look fairly realistic as far as the eyes. But images 1, 2, and 3 are definitely too big in the eyes to me. ^_^ All of it very nicely rendered (I do like the Marilyn Monroe look-alike there), but the bottom three images, IMO, do the most for showing a proper proportion between V4's face and eyes.

The head is about 10-15% too large from when I messed around with 4, so goes without saying the eyes would be too large also.  Pretty much they slapped a babies/preteen head on a somewhat womans body as a base.

Ja, well... don't get me started on the REST of her anatomy. LOL!! I could sit here and pick apart V4/V4.1 from top to bottom and point out a ton of disproportionate areas in the modelling, but is it worth it? Will it accomplish anything? Naaaah...

That's why we love our morphs and scaling dials. =)

They thing is that there is a dial for smaller eyes. She was developed as a neutral character so, since half the people made bigger eyes, they factored that in. There is a dial to control it. Butt hat is the issue with a lto of it and most of there is a dial to fix. Just people don't turn the dang dials :)

And the first one is designed to look like an actress with big eyes (at least as far as I can tell)

Gareee ( ) posted Tue, 15 January 2008 at 10:29 AM

There are default proportions, and then there is reality and the variances we see in everyday life.

Take this picture of Cher, chosen because one of the V4 characters resembles her.

By my observations, her eyes are too big, her mouth is too large, and her face is too long.. BUT she's a real person, and is quite beautiful. so how can ideal proportions apply?

When a figure is released, options are adjusted for the most popular idealized look.. yes you can scale things up or down, but the creators just chose to make V4 their own ideal.... but that's WHY they build all those dials in, people! LOL!

IMHO v4's head is OK. How many people have you seen whose heads are 1/8 of their height. I like the pseudo "nordic" look of V3 but it's not very "lifelike".

Use the dials for the eyes' size and width ,etc. and it's OK.

SamTherapy ( ) posted Thu, 31 January 2008 at 7:42 AM

V4's default eyes are disproportionately large.  The head size is fine.
