Subject: what's the use of having "Friends"?

SeanE ( ) posted Tue, 15 January 2008 at 7:27 PM · edited Wed, 24 July 2024 at 5:02 PM

no, I don't mean your drinking buddies down the pub each Friday evening but the "Friends" feature here on Rendo'...

Every now and then I get a 'new site mail' message and there's someone wanting to be a 'friend' here on rendo.

More as a means of dealing with the issue and just getting rid of the site mail message I go and click 'approve'... and that's pretty much the end of the matter. The Friends feature doesn't seem to do much else at all.

So what's the point of it?

No real point. It's just something that is on some sites and Renderosity decided to adopt it here.

Basically the only benefit I can see is that it allows you to locate certain people faster in order to send messages or check their gallery... kind of like bookmarking them for easy access to their homepage and gallery and site mail.

It is supose to be your list of friends here at Renderosity. You don't have to accept them if you don't want to.

I like it..it helps me keep up with what my friends here are doing..and I like the fave artist feature too.

The features help me stay better connected to the people I know and have met.

A question: If I need to borrow money, can I hit my "friends" up for a loan?! If yes, I'm gonna round up a few more! -Perry

Personally, I think it's kind of immature, but also has the potential to create an uncomfortable situation. Someone sends you an invitation to be his or her friend. OK, nice gesture and all, but not only does that pressure you to either accept or decline, but you're also then forced to live with the consequences.
Say that person turns out to become a serial killer. You see on national TV that you were listed as his only friend on Renderosity. Probably not something that's going to work out well for you.
What if he wants you to keep him from committing suicide one day because he lost all his DAZ stuff to a hard drive failure? Do any of us really have the time for that?

Of course, it could be worse, in a non-tragic way. What if he figures he can stay at your place while visiting a sick aunt who just happens to live in your town? As has been already suggested, what if he wants to borrow money?
What if it turns out he's running for Congress, and just wants your vote?

Well.. it's just a feature, just because the other social networking places offer it, plus, no reputable professional art site would be complete without it. ;-)

Well I guess the more friends one has, the more comments they get, regardless of how good their art is. :tongue2:

Which is why it's better to have real friends, in real life.
You can drag your friend over to your computer, point at your monitor and ask what he thinks. A real friend will then slap you in the head and say, "What the hell's the matter with you - you called me over here for THAT?"
You might then ban him from your house, or kick the crap out of him, or both, but you can't call an admin and ask to make the unacceptable comment go away like it never happened. ;-)

Any chance of an "assholes" feature?

Just to provide balance, you understand ;)
