Subject: Email notifications again?

Liam. ( ) posted Thu, 07 February 2008 at 6:40 AM · edited Fri, 01 November 2024 at 1:20 PM

Is it just me or does anyone else not receive the notifications of the new comments recently?

I received notice of a comment but it wasn't on the site

I see that markablue was wondering,

does anyone else not receive the notifications of the new comments ... ?

That does seem to happen now and then.

OTOH, I check the forums frequently enough that I don't miss a thread anyway.

Over in the Community Forum, I see some threads abut the same issue ... the admins seem to be baffled ... even though they don't seem to be able to get the programmers to work on the problem.

So, what's new with you, markablue

LOL! I'm fine,  MGD, thanks, just been busy recently. But I don't mean forum notifications - these come alright. I mean the image comments: it's the second day in a row that I didn't get one single email. And I got over 50 comments in this time

For some reason, this often happens when Renderosity sends out it's newsletter on Thursdays. Your comments should come in, perhaps just a bit late. Sorry for that folks.

I noticed that TwoPynts feels this issue,

often happens when Renderosity sends out it's newsletter on Thursdays

Yes, I have seen that response ... several times.

I have also seen the response that 'the programmers' do not see why this is happening ... also several times.

Perhaps 'someone' (pssssst ... TwoPynts, are you listening?) will give 'the programmers' a hint or three ...

  1. Perhaps "when Renderosity sends out it's newsletter on Thursdays", there is no temporaty disk space for other messages to be created.

  2. Perhaps "when Renderosity sends out it's newsletter on Thursdays", the outgoing bandwidth limit has been reached, and the portion of the system that sends out comment notifications experiences a timout contition ... and fails for that reason.

  3. Perhaps "when Renderosity sends out it's newsletter on Thursdays", the competing function of sending comment notifications is unable to make a connection (possibly because of network congestion) to the member's eMail server ... and therefore fails with a timeout condition.

  4. Perhaps the portion of the renderosity site that sends the newsletter should't be so greedy about the computer and network resources it uses ... i.e. (in technical terms) ... the process of sending the newsletter should be runing at a lower priority than other eMail processes.  After all, if the renderosity newsletter arrives a few hous later or even a day later, I won't be seriously inconvienced ... whereas, if an comment notification fails to arrive, I may loose the opportunity to respond or thank the person who made the comment.  ... and that has an effect on my reputation in the renderosity community.

Just some thoughts to pass along to the programmers.

Any comments? ... please ...

No comments from me other than I'll pass it along. I don't know or have contact with any of those mysterious programmers behind the green curtain... ;']

I will pass this on to the programmers but we have discussed this several times and the only thing that will solve this one day a week issue is to have a whole different mail server dedicated to the newsletter and one dedicated to the ebots.
The newsletter goes out to over 135,000 subscribers and so it does cause a delay while its sending but its certainly a lot shorter delay these days than it use to be...We did do something things with the current mail server to help the delay not be so long but yes there is still a small delay on this one day a week.

Well, well ... finally someone admits knowing about,

the green curtain

Thanks, TwoPynts for casting some light on that issue.  LOL

Wow! I'm sorry I even opened my mouth. I never intended to wage a war here, just asked a question. Sheesh!  It happened to me for the first time, I didn't know of any delays.

I see that markablue was concerned about the consequences of starting this thread with a

question

Please don't be too concerned ... it was a good question ... one that needs a more technical answer than the usual answers (the 'we don't see it happing now', or 'we don't see anything wrong', ... kind of answers) that I've seen far too often elsewhere ...

Please continue to ask questions ... they are one of the best ways to learn something.  After all, whenever someone asks a question, we can be reasonably sure that they want to get an answer ... and that our efforts to get and voice that answer won't be wasted.
