I was wondering if I include a "Don't read me" file and "destruction guide", maybe more people would read them?

Put the word "free" in the title somewhere and people  will likely read it.

I usually open the readme and I can quickly see at a glance if it is just standard stuff or special instructions included. If it's just standard I won't read it. But if I see special instructions I will take the time to read what they are.

able to know ourselves fully as we are, especially the evil side of us.
This we can do only if we are not angry with our critics but will take in good
heart whatever they might have to say." - Ghandi

You should search out the freebies by maclean his read me files are just wonderful to read. I think his stuff is still available over at 3d commune.

One of my pets peeves.. creators already KNOW how best to use thier products in most cases, and also know what might NOT work as well. Why not share it with your customers?

All my readme files are unique, and if I DO know any tips or tricks, I pass them on.

IMHO standard readme files are a waste of soace, and I'd rather NOT see them included at all.

(Personally, I think people who include standard freebies should be boiled in their own pudding.. that would put a stop to it, methinks...)

I was studying rendo's requirements for readme's... Lookslike rendo wants a boilerplate looking readme. What I think I'll do in my products is give rendo the standard readme, and then make a pdf (or similar) user manual.
Maybe I'll put a PNG at the top of the main content group (character or whatever it is) pointing people to read the instructions... with filename and location.
I wonder if there's a way to make a cr2 to launch a PDF file...   (Anyone?)

dodger recently posted a new female figure at legume's poser newsgroup.  in addition
to the README.txt, it's got an empty file with the name "Seriously, read the README".
as in many other cases, the figure won't work unless the user reads the README.txt.

I started doing PDF's too, but Rendy doesn't take them.
Too bad if you ask me, much more professional looking.

What can you do? sigh

You make standard readme for rendo's requirements, then you make a 'user manual' in PDF format.  I don't think they can prevent you from doing that?
Rendo's readme to me is more like release notes and terms of use.

And if they don't let me do that, I'll provide a User Manual PDF (or maybe HTML format, I haven't decided yet) as a "bonus item".
Plus, I'll have a product support website/forum, wher the same will be made available.

What I don't want to do is dumb dowm the product, or forgo innovations, in order to make it fit within 70 Meg or not being able to provide proper instructions. There's  not much you can do wioth a txt file, but provide a long boring textual description that most people won't have patience to read.

I was told that they can't upload PDF's.

As far as the 70 mb limit, it has limited my DarkAssassin product. The product is only available at ContentParadise and my website. I'm not about to go through the whole product and try to trim the fat just for Rendy. Maybe for future reference I'll take note of the file size as I'm working.

Personally I think Rendy needs to rethink the PDF and file size limits. But if no one else has an issue, then... 😉

Don't you just love Daz readme files? When the installer has just spread like 40 megs of stuff throughout your runtime and you want to know where it is and the readme says "it's in your Poser folder". Ah, great, thanks, I would never have thought to look in there. :)

Conniekat8 ( ) posted Mon, 18 February 2008 at 2:07 PM

Yeah, I have to split what I'm making into two different products to fit the file size limit.
so, if I have a clothing mesh that has a selection of textures.... I have to make the clothing mesh and a single texture one package, and the remaining textures another product.
Total, it'll cost more then the original pack would cost, and a bet a lot of people will miss out on additional textures, and think that I'm milking them by making it two packages.
Also, they no longer allow people to do bonus content. Well, you can have it I suppose, but you can't make any mention of it in promos - so there's really no point to having it.

Not being able to provide proper instructions is a concern I have about selling stuff through DAZ. At least rendo allows me the luxury of including the "long boring textual description that most people won't have patience to read".

Why don't you just skip this place then Connie?  Put your packs up at OKCRandy's store, 3DCommune (which will give you a portal into Content Paradise) and possibly one other like Antonio's new store exclusively for the male mesh... http://www.digitalmales.com/index.php

I checked out Randy's store last night.  Nicely laid out, easy to navigate and nice promos for the products that are big enough to actually get an idea of what your getting!! LOL

Daz allows pdf files.. Poseworks included one with Patricles 3 and shader spider over a year ago I think.

Rawart3d would also be an option.. Ron's fine with anything that benefitc customers.

Conniekat8 ( ) posted Mon, 18 February 2008 at 2:29 PM

I will have it in Randy's store http://purokc-creations.net/, but unfortunately, Randy's store doesn't get the traffic to be able to carry exclusive product.
It's very possible I will have it on 3D commune. Not putting it on Rendo, due to it's user base and volume of sales would be like cutting your nose off to spite your face.

Largest percentage of Poser users travel between DAZ and Rendo. Much smaller percentage goes to CP, RDNA and 3D commune and PoserPro's and Poser World.

For the longest time, I was planing on maing it a Rendo exclusive... but the inability to package it up as intended and not baing able to offer top notch training materials will make it non exclusive - That way at least at http://purokc-creations.net/ I can offer the package as I intended it to look, and that their forums will be the product support home base.

Daz won't be an option for this package, as they don't carry Apollo content.  I'll be knocking on their doors eventually... as soon as I build a bit of reputation. If I'm lucky, they'll be wanting to carry my stuff.

(I'm not being hot headed here. The thing is, compared to the complexity of engineering stuff I have to put together at work, putting together quality Poser packages is less then half the effort, so, I'm pretty convinced I can pull it off and make it look pretty professional)

Chat with Arien about submitting a package to DAZ.  She's got a few things there now. Did you see her new hair prop?  Got an Apollo Maximus fit and even a NearMe fit!!  It's an amazing looking prop!!   She's like you in that she pays close attention to the fine details!!
