Subject: GI dome, sky dome question

I am just getting to the point of making daylight images in Carrara.  My attempts in C6 alone have given okay results using skylight , etc. in the render options.
I see that there are some realistic sky and realistic light domes available commercially. My question is how they work in the program. Do they act as a diffuse light source, replacing the render room options?

HI Sueposer, I did the GIDome that are sell in Daz3D. The ideia for my GIDome is use a simple map to simulate light like a studio light, but using the same idea that a HDRI image can do. And even sky light and others can replace all light sources in the final render. Almost all my images are rendered using it and no light source. Those images are did to use as a more real reference light source and take a little more to render, but get the best results...

Thanks for the information. My first attempts at lighting outdoor scenes in Carrara show me I have much to learn about light placement. If I understand the sky dome correctly, it will make it easier to make posing changes after building a scene. I would not have to change 3 lights just because I changed the tilt on the actor's head!
I will give the dome a try.

The dome or HDRI idea is to mimic natural light using one image as a light source, but if you want some special light effect you still need to use another sources... sometimes a Skydome can produce dark shadows in the eyes ou others parts and a new light source could help light the scene better... its all relative...
