Subject: OT(kinda): The Monster.... has arrived MUAHAHAHAHA

Content Advisory! This message contains profanity

Ok, i shouldn't call it a monster... but it HAS arrived =D

(gave a language warning for just in case)

Yep... my computer finally got here... whoever pushed it through chicago, thanks =D

its up, its running.... doesnt have anything really installed yet....

am still pulling files off hubby's laptop....

but, because i know the questions'll start flying...

specs for the monster:

AMD Athlong 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 6000+
3.00 GHz, 4.00 GB Ram

Win(blows) XP Pro x64, SP2

750 GB HD, a 250 gig hrd, and a 250 gig external hd

here's the case... http://www.xoxide.com/thermaltake-soprano-case-black-2.html

looking for the video card stuff now...  aha... ATI X1300Pro dual head (digital only) (it didnt work in bro's linux computer, so he set it aside for me)

and.... TWO 17" flat screen skinny monitors (hehehehehe.... they still make this desk look small - and i need new glasses)  am learning that curious way of utlizing all available monitor space =D  this is FUN =D

ok... so, informal contest - i need a name for my computer.  something non-derogatory (last one was named PITA - Pain in the A......) - as i've discovered objects (like people & critters) tend to take on the properties of what they are named.... (i will never name a darling pet chaos or havok ever again).... the name also has to be kid-friendly, as i do have a 10 year old daughter, and i am STILL struggling to help maintain her childish innocence (that'll end when she discovers the "genetalia" button on poser 6... sighs)  but... my doodlebug is another story =D

ok... now, for a few questions...

as long as i UNINSTALL Vue from hubby's laptop, i should be able to then install it on this computer, right?  What about the activation code, etc?  i do have it all written down somewhere... i think *sighs - brain foggy day.... stayed up til the wee hours of the morning - silly me)... will e-on have issues?

Did any of you hear the squeal of joy when it arrived?  (giggles)

AAAAAAAAAAAAGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH  a whole new runtime organization AGAINNNNNNNNNNN.  wait.  this CAN be a good thing... must... read.... silverblade's.... tutorial......

grins

bouncies bouncies bouncies  anywyay... off to install the stuff i KNOW i can install =D

hey Frank.... NOW i'll try to see how many victorias or aikos can dance on the head of a pin ;)  (thinking of your awesome multitude of michaels you had in that cool image)

and Silverblade - time to go through your tutorials =D  YAYYYYYYY

the chaotic meli is BACK and ready to PLAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY  (until her body tells her to slow back down LOL)

and out of curiosity - i trust my bro (he built the computer for me).... and i know beyond a shadow of a doubt its better than the old pita.... but how does it compare to todays market for graphics computer?  i'm guessing somewhere mid-range.  (i cant wait to update the video card i want an nvidia - never had issues with that brand, but i wasnt gonna say no to a good free video card =-D)  bro had to go off what i was saying, and im not tech-savvy - and he isnt graphics savvy.  i finally went around and pointed him to various threads where folks discussed the "best system for Vue, or Poser" - and he went from there.

YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
bouncies again and runs off to try to organize.....

Rarer than a hairy egg and madder than a box of frogs....

You'll need a new activation code when you install on a new computer but Vue will phone home and get one for you

How 'bout calling your new box 'Perfect' then maybe it will be ;-)

I used to call my PC "Yukinbstrd" til I found out that my intermittent boot-up problems were caused by a faultily wired mains plug...

Fixed that. Now it's called "Turn Me On"...

Cheers,
Diolma

melikia ( ) posted Thu, 28 February 2008 at 6:40 PM

Ok.... now i know the answer to the vue mystery =D  phone home... LOL.

i love the names!!!  and Diolma... that story cracked me up.  My first 'real" computer (i.e. - one i purchased myself rather than as gifts from family members) was a rather odd one.... i originally named it MP for "my 'puter" - but IT took it a bit further and went with "multiple personalities"...

boot up - it would swear it had such and such memory and was an AMD K6-2

other days, it would boot up, have half of its memory, and suddenly be an AMD K6

once, i caught it trying to pass itself off as an Intel Pentium.

then, there was the PITA - which was exactly that from day 1.  built by someone who aparently was learning how to build as computer as he was building mine.  the floppy drive NEVER worked in that sucker, even with me switching it out about 10 different times.  that was just one of the many issues.

now... there is this one =D  shipping had caused a slight issue, but i quickly corrected it (i like those pretty red cables in there)

and Perfect sounds like... well... a perfect name =D  but was also liking "Turn Me On" - so was thinking maybe.... Perfectly Turned On..... or something.... not sure yet giggles  maybe... PIV  - for Perfectly In View (Vue) LOL....

hmmm.... ok, now to uninstall crap from the laptop (hubby is dancing around, he has his computer back again - too bad he lost his desk LOL.  we removed one desk to bring in a small loveseat... yes, VERY tight quarters)  now he gets to listen to me whine as i reinstall EVERRRRRRRRRRRRYTHINNNNNGGGGGGgggggggggggggggggg... yeesh.  sighs.

anyone wanna do this for me?  giggles

ok... uninstalled stuff... now time to PLAYYYYYYYYYYYY

Rarer than a hairy egg and madder than a box of frogs....

Congrats on getting the beastie Meli ! Lets hope it was worth the wait :) Sounds like it's going to do you fine - you won't know Vue with all that RAM and stuff - should go like greased lightning heh.

I call mine "Bob" - Bit of an insider IT joke really but it appealed to my sense of the warped.  You could always geek out completely and call it HAL :)

*chuckles... downloading poser 6's updates now, then off to install poser 7, update it, then install vue and update that - then i gotta go to the store with hubby, then its evening at his mom's...

ahhh, the first "family" computer we had as a TI 99/4A (something like that).... it had cartridges, and you spent days programming it in basic for it to bounce a pixel from side to side - and it was amazing =D.  that was when it was discovered my bro will be a computer geek, and i will be the one to call him in a panic going "I BROKE ITTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT"  if i touched it, it went haywire.  it got to the point my dad wouldnt even let me play TI Invaders.

then, i remember something that ran on floppy floppys - an 8088... that was fun - it was harder for me to hurt that machine =-D  spent an entire summer sucking down soda and playing a game called "below the root".  strangely enough... thinking back to the graphics (they sucked), the fact that it was green on black (yuck).... even then, i was wondering when they'd be able to make it so it was more life-like.

ahhh, memory lane....  my first computer for JUST my use was a graduation gift.... a 386 with.... windows 3.0  dies laughing  within 24 hours, i had nuked the monitor.  don't ask, i have no idea.

and then a backgrade to a 10$ 8088.... THAT was fun... it shocked people i was able to go online with it =D and then one i had for a few months and sold because i was moving - it was a pentium.  then the MP one LOL.

let me see that amiga - i bet i could crash it.  its a talent.  i have to say (and wonder why i hate them so much) - its darned hard for me to crash a Mac unless it has some problem already

and.... that made me remember.... my first animation ever was on an old APPLE - i made it draw a "truck" and "roll" it

thank you honors society LOL.  (it was my favorite time - when they would let us play with the computers and learn new ways of making it draw things)

sorry, still downloading, so you guys are kinda stuck with me grins

hoping i can get everything done before we have to leave....

i hate this fake DSL.  =/

and i am completely loving this dual monitor setup....if i get bored, i can always chase the mouse from screen to screen.... or do what i did earlier and piled all my windows exactly in the middle and split them across the two screens (until it made me feel woozy looking at it)

mmmm.... if i set the vue window to "restore down" - could i then stretch it where i wanted?  like.... across both screens?  should be interesting to find out =D  i think i'll do that install next....

downloads are finished =D  thanks for keepin me company =D

edit:  hopefully back in a little bit waiting for yet another update.install/whatever

I had a car named 'Anti-christ'- lived up to its name (brand new, hit by tow truck backing up at light same day I bought it.)
My current Mac Book Pro my wife calls 'Your Mistress' as it seems to dominate me all the time. If your anything like me, you could spend the whole of your life coaxing scenes to life on computer. So how about 'master', the 'Significant Other', She Who Must Be Obeyed (SWMBO), let's see what else,  HARDAC (Award yourself 2 geek pts if you get the reference) THACO (Why the heck not?) Brainiac, Antikythera Mechanism (Well, everything we buy cutting edge today will be obsolete in 18 months)
But now my mind is beginning to wander....

...Insert some witty or thought provoking comment here...

melikia ( ) posted Thu, 28 February 2008 at 8:56 PM

*chuckles and loses the geek points... takes a bit more than a name to get me to remember anymore.  HAL - i remembered grins  and from the BOOK, not the movie that bored me to tears.

am downloading the updates to poser 7 now.... takes all of 30 seconds to install 'em, and about 15 minutes to download.  took me a long time to find my vue cd's - they had fallen behind the bookshelf.  which meant - yep... hubby to the rescue.  chuckles - and all he wanted was a nap.

had a car named garfield, one named odie - and for you dragon lovers - one named Ruth - there's MY geek side =D

all three cars were the same make, same model.  Ford Fiestas.... Garfield was bright orange, odie was white, and Ruth was white, but a year older than odie.

and.... hubbys already jeolous of the time my computer gets - if i name it my Sig. Other... think he'd kill it LOL.

besides... i dont wanna sleep with it... i want it to do my bidding.  quickly.  without fuss.  without question.  and without fail!

demanding thing, aren't i?  LOL

sighs  and we'll have to go before i can finish installing things =(

oh well, there's always when we get back LOL

mmmm....

these downloads are takin FOREVERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

*sighs and goes to watch tv again =-/ *

8088? You must be as old as me! (I used 8080 so I win!)

I used to work for a company named Gandalf. All our machines were named after characters from Lord of the Rings, at least until we ran out of names. I had "Sam" but later ended up with "Boromir." Nobody could spell Boromir so I stopped getting mail for a while, they could deal with mycat@sam but mycat@boromir was too much.

Many of my home computers were named after cats who used to live with me. That was a mistake, shutting down a machine named after a beloved but now deceased pet is traumatic.

My first two networked computers - the first time I had to name a computer - were a tower and a squat desktop. Natasha and Boris respectively. :-)

One company had two Dell Infinity servers, named Infinity and Beyond. :-)

A university chemistry department named the server with IP address x.x.x1 Hydrogen, x.x.x.2 Helium, etc. They even had short names H, He, etc.

melikia ( ) posted Fri, 29 February 2008 at 3:27 AM

chuckles...  i'm 33 - and unlike a lot of females, unafraid to tell my age.  i still get carded when i go to purchase alcohol LOL (definate boost to ego!)

my brother learned the lesson about naming machines after beloved pets.... he had two named gizmo and rascal... after the two puppies we had since i was 12.  Rascal passed Thanksgiving weekend, 1999.  Gizmo passed on a few years later (they were brothers)....

not sure what he calls his machines now...  not even sure how many he's running LOL.

and i do remember the 8080's... used one of them for a while, too...

the most fun i ever had though was those realllllllly old modems - putting the telephone receiver on the modem itself LOL.  whatever ya do, DONT talk too loud!

i think the universe it trying to tell me to get to bed (midnight here).... one- the aurora are out, and are magnificant - right over the house, a long ribbon of white with a slight greenish tint.... which is screwing up my television.  right now, i have fox on the station usa usually is... weird.

two - i cant manage to finish downloading the poser 7 updates, cus the website is spazzing out...   and im very methodical - i wont continue until i have poser 7 finished and updated.  sighs  and here i wanted to try to make aurora somehow in vue.

three - gotta get up early for a doc appointment - that post-surgery checkup, when i get to fuss at he doc for giving me a FROWNY face scar under my belly button.

Hey MyCat - your avatar looks like my midnight-kitty =D  giggles

ahhh, hell... i'll install vue anyway =D

then before my appointment tomorrow, i might can play for a few minutes =D

im way too addicted.

and still no real idea on a name for the computer... thinking Sedna - Goddess of the Sea and Infinite Supply... Inuit/Eskimo (not sure which, sources seem to be confused - perhaps both peoples).... fitting for alaska, and i like the idea of infinite supply.... also fitting considering a project i had been working on and now have to start over (lost some of my artwork in the PITA crash... corrupted area of hard drive - bleh).... and as an artist, an infinite supply of ANYTHING is a good thing =D  (especially creativity - and in this genre - hard drive space LOL)

The thought of Sedna the Goddess' lost fingertips is kinda freaky.... wonder if i would constantly be having to change my peripherals?

kicks smithmicro GRRRRR, you are annoying me!

ok, off to install vue, since poser 7 is (as usual) NOT COOPERATING.

After having a look at the link you posted, I would call him "Mr. Suit".  I have a laptop named "Ferrari", mostly because it's an Acer Ferrari, in the red, with the horse on it, so no, not really creative. My desktop is called Perikles. I must have read to much about ancient Greece then...

... and my first Computer was a Z80. At least compatible with the 8080, although from Zilog.
