Hi guys!
The other day i needed help because my figures lost their morphs... so i turned OFF the use of "External Binary Morphs" in Preferences. IT WORKED!.... the problem seems to be gone

BUT... i have this question... NOW that my Poser only creates ONE document... NOT the .PMD... IT TAKES SO MUCH TIME SAVING!!!!!>> IS THIS NORMAL?... i mean like 5 minutes REAL TIME which i find is too much when it comes to saving an archive.... is this normal. Do this happens to everyone?

is there a way a could speed things?

Thank you guys!

Depends on the size of the scene. For my scenes (multiple figures, complex environment), a saving/loading time of a couple of minutes is not unusual. File size is 200-300 MB, usually.

Maybe compression will speed things up, but I doubt it. Copying a 300 MB file on my system is orders of magnitude faster than Poser saving the file, so I don't think disk access speed is an important factor.

The reason why saving with "External Binary Morph Targets" is faster is that the PMD file is binary.  Writing (and reading) the 4 bytes that represent each IEEE floating point value is, let's say, fragging quick (they just write/read 4 bytes directly to/from the file).  Writing those values out as ASCII text into the Poser file, on the other hand, requires a lot more work since the 4 byte floating point value needs to be converted into ASCII text first.  And vice versa when reading the ASCII text.

Simple as that.  There is no CPU instruction set to expediate conversion between floating point and ASCII - it is all software algorithms.

C makes it easy to shoot yourself in the foot. C++ makes it harder, but when you do, you blow your whole leg off.

thank you guys so much for your help!
i guess i stay with the binary off, no matter how much it takes to saves

but thank you so much for your valuable help!

Frankly, I'm of two minds about pmds. If I ever use a character with a pmd that's in my library, and then somehow that character gets moved or lost or deleted, then the resulting file has to be rebuilt because none of the replacement characters will take any morph settings, even using the dials.

Still, as was pointed out, a pmd also saves a ton and a half of space, not to mention load time. I wish there was a happy compromise somewhere, but it seems an all or nothing kinda deal.

Frankly Sean, now that you mentioned.... you couldn't be more right..
it's a shame... im suffering here with the waiting.... and waiting... everytime i load or save a character.... it's just not fair

You can set compressed files , which saves ons of space ( well alright it saves some space ) and you can do it in Poser settings , or in windows xp, you can have your scene folder as compressed by the operating system .

Ans YES either one will take longer to save .
