Subject: shadow help please

I am getting these inky black shadows, not everywhere, but it seems when things are in tight proximity- but I can't really figure it out for sure.  I have tried turning off the shadows for the rope, and increasing the shadow blur radius, but nothing seems to work.  Any tips?

Looks to me like ambient occlusion on the skin of the character.  I actually don't think that looks bad, might tone it down just a little (turn down maxdist a bit for the AO node).

is that "have's" bound model "tuyuko" or "eroko"?
