Subject: Copying Vue files in event of a crash

DOM1 ( ) posted Sun, 13 April 2008 at 8:46 PM · edited Fri, 09 August 2024 at 10:53 PM

I am about to make a ghost copy of my entire system to a new hard drive. I am a bit concerned that 'vue' files will not copy correctly all the information, and may get corrupted during the process.

Has anyone successfully made an image of their system and managed to get their version of Vue and all scenes working, as before.

Cheers

Dom.

well, with Vue, always always make sure you include textures files (tick the selection) when saving your scenes and .vobs :)

Personally whenever I do a ghost image I also physically back up my "mydocs" folder where all the Vue stuff sits to an XHD just in case!

I'm in the process of doing something similar now and I already had one problem. DOM1, maybe you can try to see if you have the same situation.

I had one scene, saved including texture files, which didnt open correctly on the new machine (it was perfect in the old one). The reported error was that a texture file was missing. This particular texture was bitmap based and this bitmap was embedded in a material that I had purchased. I do not have the individual bitmap on which the texture was based, as it is embedded. So, I researched and found that the bitmap file is temporarily placed in a temp folder in Vue's folder structure. I didnt finish the experiment yet but I think I will have to manually recreate the texture based on that temporary file in the temp folder and copy it to the new machine. To do this for one or two textures is ok, but to do it for dozens is out of the question. So this can be a real problem. Does anyone have a solution for this? Thanks!

If you have Infinite, check the link tab in the World Browser.  The bitmap "should" show up there.  You can right-click and export the link to save the bitmap.  Then I would modify the material to use the new bitmap.
