Actually, I think I might have got around it by cheating and comping missile trails in post :)
Thanks for the offer though

For a background model (of the "Oh shit, it's WW3" sort), it wouldn't be hard to knock something up in a modelling program. I'd use Wings 3D, because that's what I have. Since it's free... The shapes are mostly pretty simple, for instance, the Atlas missile shown here is a cylinder with a simply-tapered nose, a slight flare at the base, and two slightly more complicated cylinders on the side, half-buried in the main shape. A Titan has rather exposed engines, which would be a bit more complicated. In Wings, I'd start with a Cylinder primitive, select one end-polygon, and use extrude and scale-radial to get the shape. As long as the proportions are OK, the final scale can be tweaked to fit later.

I was initially thinking something along the lines of a tomahawk but since you aren't going to be able to see very much of the missiles at all, I thought it was a lot easier to just postwork the trails in PS (We'll see how that goes - my postwork skills aren't great)

Thanks for all the comments peeps :)

hmm...Wings, take a sphere, stretch along the polar axis, cut in half, extrude the flat end, bevel 3 or 4 of the bottomost vertices, and extrude them, and Bob's yer uncle...;)
