Subject: Vue - which side of the fence?

melikia ( ) posted Wed, 23 April 2008 at 3:34 AM · edited Tue, 11 February 2025 at 11:01 PM

Ok, i have XP pro X64, i do believe a dual processor, and 4 gigs of ram and i wanna use it all =D

i stupidly installed vue into the x86 area (due to thinking it was the 64 bit side), and aparently I was supposed to put it in the OTHER area,....

I have 6pro studio, and was wondering - is it possible to have vue straddle the fence so to speak?  i mean, install it on both "halves", so long as i dont stupidly load both copies at once?

am curious, because it seems to me that when i get to upgrade to infinite, i WANT it on 64 bit side - but there are things like skinvue that dont work with this.

will i have to pay more for the floating license to do this on one machine?

*This doesn't actually matter a squat, it will work in whichever folder!!

Vue6Infinite will install the 64 bit version when it sees you have a 64 bit OS, it's automatic, you don't need to do anything!
SkinVue64 is close to coming out according to my info!!

chuckles - runs ok on the "wrong" side - and it WOULD have put it in the correct place, but i installed poser first - and IT went into this area, and i FORGOT poser isn't x64. (and i manually put it where i THOUGHT it was supposed to go - not where vue wanted to go)

giggles and shakes her head

im terrible, i know....

but i still wanna know if it can "straddle the fence" =D

I'm a bit lost to be honest!! Why would you want 2 copies of it on one computer????
Where's the advantage?
Not trying to be nasty here, I just don't get what you're trying to do, sorry!!

grins  i'm thinking more in terms of infinite than this one because then skinvue itself becomes part of the equation...

on the 64 bit side, it can utilize all the memory i have, as well as both threads.

on the side its currently on, it cant.  however, python is NOT available in X64, so if i ever really want to play with skinvue, i'd have to have it on the 32 bit side.

so, make the scene; run it on 32 bit side, run skinvue, save scene, load back in 64 bit side - it works??

i dunno, don't have infinite or skinvue to play... and the question came about because im looking at having to MOVE vue to the 64 bit area, and i feel a bit lazy at backing up files ;)

so, hubby asked if it was possible - told him i had no clue, but would hopefully find an answer =D

I don't see this "side" thing you're on about!!
Vue6Infinite will automatically detect that your pc is 64 bit and will run the 64 bit version, there's nothing you can do to alter that AFAIK so when you install to a 64 bit system, you get the 64 bit version period!!
It doesn't install a 32 bit version on a 64 bit computer!

I think you're getting confused by the 2 folders on a 64 bit pc, the program folder and the program folder[x86], they don't actually mean anything in terms of performance, it's jsut a folder structure to seperate the 32 bit apps from the 64 bit apps.
From a functional point of view it does nothing!!

ok... makes sense (allthough its a bit confusing to someone who just recently discovered theres more than one version of windblows XP LOL)

so then, my question becomes...

HOW can i tell if its seeing both threads...

oh wait, considering my ignorance (and yep, used the right word there =D )...

is this thing supposed to have two processors?

under computer it says "AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core processor 600+ 3.00 GHz, 4.00 GB of RAM"

i take that to mean yes, i have two.

if i dont, then bro's getting a lecture.

ok, so, assuming i AM correct, and this IS a dual processor...

aren't i supposed to see something to that effect in Vue?  that its running on more than one... whatever it is?  (sorry, i really dont explain things well, and tend to get myself more confused)  .......if yes... WHERE?

my inability to figure all this is out is what led me to think there were actual DIVISIONS of 64 versus 32 bits grins sheepishly

ok I hope you don't think I was insulting you, I wasn't,  I just trying to help!

At the bottom of the Vue window it should say how many cores you're using, mine says 4 because I use a Quad core so your's should say 2 but I'm not sure if Vue6Pro does that, Infinite certainly does but not sure about the pro version, maybe someone who has that version could say for sure!

i have a blank box where its SUPPOSED to say something.

could be a limitation of pro.

and no, didnt think you were insulting me at all =D

i really DO get this confused about things that SHOULD be simple to understand.

ive been digging through the manual and there's like 2 pages on the "status bar" - which is where its supposed to show threads.  it shows it in the book.  it talks about it showing it.  it DOESNT say how to make it show up if it vanished.

throws the book on the "wont cry if i need to burn it as a heat source" pile

I live half me life in a state of confusion ;)

Maybe try resetting Vue options to default?

dont' think I've ever had that bar disappear, except when it got hidden or cut off by the UI glitching and bottom of apps get chopped off.

Happens a lot in Vista 64, for some reason, about an inch above the taskbar gets chopped off of apps, weird!
altering desktop background pic always fixes it.

i dunno - i dont remember seeing it when it was on hubby's laptop, but then again, his scren is small, im blind as a bat, and i didnt look that close =D  i was too busy pushing buttons LOL

maybe someone else with pro can answer our riddle... is it an infinite thing that you get to see these things?

and ive done the default reset thing a few times - and it hasnt made a difference

Vue 6 Pro Studio will use both processors but it won't show anything.  Only Infinite has the processor indicator at the bottom.  I know this because I actually asked the question over in the Vue forum at Cornucopia 3d when I was playing with the Infinite PLE and noticed the difference.

While Vue is rendering something, fire up Windows Task Manager and see whether Vue is using about 100% of the processor. If it's using 50% it is only using 1 of them.

melikia ( ) posted Fri, 25 April 2008 at 5:30 PM

WOOOHOOOO!!!! we have liftoff - 100% usage =D

Holy crap not to derail the thread but SKinVue 64 might make me switch up to a 64bit OS.

melikia ( ) posted Sun, 27 April 2008 at 5:51 PM

feel free to derail the thread - i, too, cant wait for the 64 bit skinvue - it'll be one of the first purchases i make after upgrading to infinite.

so, new question - how do those who ARE on a 64 bit system RUN vue infinite in 32 bit mode so they can use their skinvue?

(i am sick to death of tweaking skins manually)

Since you are allowed to install Vue on a second machine as long as you don't use both simultaneously, I use my old 32 bit machine for SkinVue. I then save the posed figure as a Vue object. It's a hassle, but not as much as tweaking the materials manually.

hmmm - i may just have to wait for the 64 bit skinvue =(

hubby would absolutely kill me if i put vue back on his laptop.  (his laptop needs to go into the shop, its limping)

I have a laptop gathering dust - because i have nowhere to set it up, and its one of those that's kinda-broke - it has to be set up, turned on, and NOT moved ever after amen (or its a pain to get it to turn on again LOL)  not even sure what the specs on it are LOL.  but, once i have enough room, at the least it'll be a rendercow.  Moooooooooooooooo.

im a bit frustrated with vue right now - i keep running into the same crashing issue.  in the function editor, it i try to load up a texture map... nine times outta ten, vue closes without any warning.  just BAM - its gone.

i forgot to save up to that point on a very complex material i was attempting - and it did it to me.

so, am frustrated, and am pondering printing up a large sign to tack to my wall where i cant help but see it that says...

"PREVENT A MIGRAINE,
SAVE OFTEN!!!"

i just want a furry rug!
kicks vue for not having seperate bump and displacement mapping

edit:  i cant wait for peggy's class, honestly - hopefully then i'll know what i'm plugging into and what its supposed to do instead of what i'm doing now.  i feel like a cook handed a buncha cans of food with no labels.  randomly opening them can lead to quite disasterous results (on the other hand, you could invent a new dish quite by accident)

sighs and dives back into this danged furry rug
