Subject: OK to set 'normals forward' for everything?

dennisharoldsen ( ) posted Mon, 28 April 2008 at 3:36 PM · edited Thu, 20 February 2025 at 3:43 AM

i have been working with poser for over a year now and i still keep finding new things i have to fix that i didn't know about. my purpose is to generate simple clipart for a graphics program i have developed for kids. (hopefully without having to fix my tools or materials that i have purchased.)

i bought most of the lisa botanical packages but i couldn't get them to look right. i posted the situation here and learned that i needed to set 'normals forward'. i appreciate the information i received, which included a script to fix an entire scene. without the help i have received on this forum, i would have given up long ago.

i really don't want to know what 'normals forward' means, i just want to make a few images with the content i purchased. i have been noticing now that other content i have seems to have the same problem.

you may have noticed that i might have an issue with products i purchase that i have to fix before i can use them. please forgive me; i won't go any further on that subject.

what i really want to know is:

can i just set 'all' content i use to 'normals forward' without causing problems?

Yep.

Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)

And here is a trusty little script that will help you with that :)

http://www.renderosity.com/mod/forumpro/showthread.php?thread_id=2730383

svdl came to my rescue and made a script to turn on Normals Forward for all material zones at once.

It's for Poser 6.  I don't know  if it will work for Poser 7.  Poser 5 doesn't have a "normals forward" area and you have to do each zone manually using the grouping tool I think.

The working script is the second one posted.

For reference, here's the workaround for Poser 5 users.

I tried running this python on Mac P6, it didn't work. :(

It's for PC.  Maybe ask if he knows how to make it for MAC users too? It's a really handy script.

BastBlack,

I'm not sure it should have a problem on the MAC.

Did you get the first one or the second one. The first one was not sufficiently picky about what it tried to operate on. In P6, the Python interface is a little strange.

Scroll down further - there's another version that should work on P6.

The second one should work on a Mac too, it doesn't use any PC specific Python calls.

Why do you have to set "Normals Forward"?  Shouldn't they already be?

svdl ( ) posted Wed, 30 April 2008 at 11:48 PM

Many newer items (those made in/for P6 and up) have "Normals_Forward" set. Not all of them.
All older items don't have it.

I mean, isn't that a part of modeling, to make the normals all facing the same direction?
